We are booked on the Mercury for the transatlantic cruise March 31, 2002 but have not been able to find out where the port is in Rio. Does anyone know where the port is and if there are any nice hotels near by ?
The Port is actually in downtown Rio. You would be best staying at a hotel in the beach areas... Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon. My first recommendation would be the Rio Sheraton... the only hotel in Rio directly on the beach and a short ride into Copacabana and Ipanema. It is just a short, inexpensive cab ride to the piers downtown. Get to the pier with lots of time to spare. Embarkation in Rio is not as efficient, to say the least, as it is up here.
Rio is my favorite City on earth. Lots to see there... it is just beautiful to behold and the people are fabulous! Hope you give yourselves a few days before embarking the Merc.
Thank you for your tips on Rio. We are sailing from Rio on the Mercury 1/6/02 around the horn to Valparaiso. We plan to spend two nights in Rio prior to sailing, and will be staying at the Rio Sheraton. From the website of the hotel, it looks like a great property-- right on the beach, two swimming pools, a gym, and all the amenities. We booked the cruise line's two night stay prior to the cruise. We looked at buying our own package, but the price was just about the same for this hotel, and it included the transfer to the pier.
Paul... you're in for a treat! We're running several groups down there in January and February... will be passing on some Rio tips as time goes by.
By the way, Santiago, Chile is one of the most dramatic cities on Earth, surrounded by the Andes Mountains... wonderful people... a great city to visit. Usually, you'll get a day room at a hotel in Santiago. The ship gets in to Valparaiso in the early morning... and the flights to the U.S. leave VERY late at night... so plan to do some sightseeing in this remarkable city, too.
