We were on Infinity in April / Hawaii: I meant to purchase the CD by Onyx but didn't get a chance. There was one song they played several times - and seems to me it was like a processional - it was really majestic and - loud. I believe it was something like Entering (or leaving) Paradise - the piece was not typical pool type music - gathered momentum as they played.
Do you see anything like Entering and Leaving Paradise listed on the CD?
(Sorry - this has been driving me CRAZY trying to remember what the piece was titled and you are the first one I've "met" who bought the CD.)
Thanks for "scratching that little itch" in by brain.
The song is titled "Conquest of Paradise". I too fell in love with it. It sounds like a countries national anthem. Very moving. We bought it last year while in Europe on the Millennium. I have the tape. I had thought that Onyx was on the Summit though. There is another group called Opus.
Could it also possibly have been OPUS.? They were on Mercury. They are a hard-working, great reggae band playing at the pool & in the club & had everyone up with the "dollar song." Most of the songs they perform were by other performers so they did not have a CD altho' everyone wanted one!!!
So if these really good bands are on Summit & Infinity--what bands are now on Mercury & Galaxy?....How long do they stay on one ship & does anyone know if this info can be checked in advance. We looked forward to seeing OPUS everyday at the pool, at the special deck parties & at nite in the Club!? On Merc. There was also a good achipella (sic) band & Joy & something in the small club bar....the Bands/music in dining room was all excellent(much better than RCCL) altho' the shows not so great!
I guess you're right, Opus -- I remember that now -- but I checked my Daily News and it said Onus -- must have been a misprint!! THanx. Anyway, they were really good. I've heard Onyx, too. Both about the same.
As a public service, here is a complete list of pool bands currently playing on Celebrity ships:
Millie OVUM (a bunch of good eggs)
Galaxy OLEO (I can't believe they're not better)
Mercury OPAL (they're real gems)
Horizon ORAL (well spoken)
Century OVAL (not for squares)
Constellation OXEN (the yoke's on you)
Zenith Billy Bob and the Memphis Marauders
Cute joke! But the band is a big thing for many of us on Carib. cruises. Sets alot of that tropical tone--even for non-dancers! So who is on Galaxy now & do the bands work the same contract schedules as the other employees?
Hey, thanks for figuring out that it's a joke. I was beginning to worry.
I think the band on Galaxy now is ORKA--a whale of an outfit. They had fetched up on a desert island one day after being thrown overboard from a Carnival ship by a gaggle of crazed and drunken newlyweds. When they saw the Galaxy go by, they swam frantically to it where they were rescued, dried off, and put to work. They've been there ever since.
And thanks to everyone who helped me scratch the itch on my brain (it was diagnosed as "drain bamage") - I found a great version of "Conquest of Paradise" (performed by the Onyx on Infinity in April) on an album containing other rousing / Olympic-type processionals performed by John Williams and the Boston Pops.
Thanks again for helping me find / remember the name of that piece!
I was also on the Infinity in April and had the same experience with the song. It reminded me of something one would hear as a backgroung in a movie about a Russian Atomic Sub gruiding through the water, quite haunting. I asked them for the name of the song, but I don't remember at this time. Sorry.
