Heading to Alaska June 9th for Mercury's Inside Passage trip...does anyone have any advice regarding the helicopter glacier tours? We are trying to decide between the Mendenhall Glacier Tour and the more expensive Pilot's Choice Glacier Explorer Tour. Is the second one worth the extra money (approx. $80. pp more for 35 extra minutes on the tour)?
We did the Mendanhall glacier helicoptor tour and it was fine. The time we spent on the glacier was plenty. It is cold, slippery and often wet! On our day it was raining but mild. Thus it got foggy. Everyone was wearing those lovely yellow raincoats and moon boots. The surface is very slippery and uneven so you must be cautious. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity, so don't miss it. I can't see how more time would enhance your glacier experience.
I have done the regular glacier landing twice. The last time the weather was sunny and warm. The first time it was cloudy, windy, snowy and wet. I would not have wanted to pay extra on a cloudy windy, wet day.
If you want to save a few dollars, book with Temsco directly. We did and saved some money. They have a web site.
