Default Clothes for Alaska

We are booked for the Alaska cruise on the Mercury Sept.14th/2003. This is our first Alaska cruise and we're wondering what the weather will be like, going at the end of the season like this. What kind of clothes should we bring? I know that September is generally a warm and sunny month in Vancouver (I live in the area) but don't know what to expect as we travel up the coast.

You can expect anything. You need to bring a range of clothes from swimsuits to raingear. Ketchikan especially, can be very wet.

Bring clothes for warm and cool weather as well as wet weather. Bring some gloves and a hat if you like to be out on deck. It can get cool while the ship is moving. It can be nice enough to use the pools also. Alaska has a mix of all types of weather.

The key to dressing for Alaska is layers! Bring clothes that you can layer on and off easily.

Sailed on the Infinity the exact same dates as you are two years ago and it was cool, but very pleasant. Days started off in light jackets and by mid-day it was just a regular shirt. We had exceptional weather and NO rain, but I have had some rain on other cruises to Ak. I understand it has been a very warm winter in AK, but that may not have any bearing on Sept. Enjoy your trip....Ak is such a quiet, beautiful place.

We were on Infinity on Sept 19th cruise last year. High temperature were in high 40's to low 50's. Got into 30's at night. Temperature at Hubbard Glacier was 20's. Dress warm and enjoy. Been to Alaska 6 times,. this is our favorite cruise. This was also our best Alaska cruise. Once on Mercury, 3 times on HAL and twice on Princess.

Layers is the key.

Beyond that, a hooded Thinsulate jacket will almost certainly be useful. So will several pair of good, warm socks, especially if you're going glacier climbing or on other outdoor adventures.

Thanks for all the helpful advice! Anyone want to chip in with their suggestions for shore excursions, it would be much appreciated!

Dave Starkey:

How did you sail on the Infinity two years ago on the same dates? That was just after 9/11, and the ship didn't sail!! I was supposed to be on that one.
