Default "open" cabin status on the Mercury

I am thinking of booking the Alaska cruise on the Mercury 7/6/03 for myself and 13 year old daughter. We have never been on a cruise before. Is it wrth the extra money for an oceanview room? What does it mean to book a room in the "open" status? Does that improve your chance of getting an upgrade or something? Should I book excursions myself or through the ship? Any wisdom will be appreciated!

Also, should I just book through the Celebrity website or is there an advantage to using a travel agent or shopping around online. So far the price seems the same everywhere on line.
