*CENTURY-Any Reviews & Tips would be great from recent c

Hi,
I was hoping to see more reviews regarding the Celebrity Century. I've heard both bad and good (food/service/cabins/entertainment/etc.) and am trying to decide between the 1995 Century & the RCI Radiance of the Seas. My concern is the age of the Century (1995). Tips on the Western Caribbean would be great also!
Can anyone give advice on which ship I should choose or know of any great deals please let me know.
Thanks!

Check out many different cruise forums. There are a few threads on anothe Celebrity board from folks who recently returned from the Escape week 6/7 on the Century. Celebrity is pretty good about keeping up appearances on its ships even though Century is almost 8 years old. Her cabins are smaller but RCCL ships are rather small too comparing outside to outside. I do not remembr her having a dome covered pool but there is a T-pool which is worth a fee in the spa. Compare costs, itineraries and what you like to do on a cruise. Celebrity is really enhancing its product with Champagen as you embark, cold towels at the pool and when you return from shore, true white glove service is nice but they do not entertain or have the best entertainment. It may be good, just not great.
Bon Voyage

I wouldn't be suprised if the Century is in better shape than the Radiance. Celebrity is *much* better at cleanliness and upkeep of their ships than RCI is. I was on Century in 1999 and already many chairs were being reupholstered, carpets and areas of carpets replaced, railings replaced, one chair on a bar stool completely removed and repaired. This is the sort of maintenance and upkeep you should expect from Celebrity. Yes, the ship is not new and there will be signs of wear, especially in the staterooms. It's no big deal. An 8 year old ship is not an old ship. Before the 1990s shipbuilding boom ships were expected to be in service for 30 years.

Nanatravel,

Century's standard cabins are larger than RCI's, and so are the upper-level cabins. Also, Century's standard cabins are a tad larger than the Millennium class ships: 172, sq. ft. vs. 170.

I will be on the Century July 5-12 and will be glad to let you know how things are when I return. I'm excited-never been on Celebrity before.

My husband and I sailed on the Century 7 weeks ago. We were also concerned about the age of the ship, but we were pleasantly surprised. The ship was beautiful. Celebrity has really done a good job with the upkeep and cleanliness. The food and service were wonderful. The entertainment was good, but not great. I don't remember be greeted with champagne or white glove service, but maybe that is for people who are in the suites.

Spanky,

Champagne is for everyone, one of the new "enhancements". White glove service and being escorted to one's room is for everyone, doesn't matter the cabin level. If you embark early you will not be escorted to your cabin.

I'm kind of alarmed at how many people are concerned about the age of the Century. I could see a ship built in the early 80s and earlier, but any ship built in the 90s simply isn't old. And maintenance is a line issue. Celebrity, HAL and Princess tend to keep their ships in better shape than at least NCL and RCI does. Yes, there's wear with use, but there is in any product. So, the unprecedented and rather unnecessary shipbuilding boom has caused passengers to think that they should be concerned with 4-10 year old ships where once these ships were considered relatively new.

Think about this, if you were going to New York City and staying in a hotel would you go for the newest hotels or for the highest rated ones (if they were affordable). Would you not stay in the Plaza or Waldorf because of their age?

AMEN BEN!!

I have to laugh when pax are concerned about the age of an 8 year old ship. I guess they are so used to trying out the new model each year that they forget that there was a time when there were no new ships and we were sailing on vessels that pre-dated World War II. Celebrity really makes the effort (most of the time) to keep their ships in top shape.

Simply one of the best ships we have sailed!

Celebrity line I would say is the best in service on board. I have neen on the Centrury 2 times. That is the good news.

The bad news is they hava a habit of not stopping at ports for various reasons nit just weather. Engine truoble, rudder malfunction and so on. It hapened to me and it was told by other passengers that it has happend on the Century in the past....maybe the Captain has issues.

What they do when you miss a port is give each passenger $50.00. Not a big deal to them considering they saved more than the grand total they paid they paid out to the passengers in port charges.

The customer service will do nthing for you. All it comes down to is you paid for a trip, full price, you get only a portion.

I could have spent $500.00 less per person for the same cruise missing that port but you are at their mercy. Be warned......this is not an isolated occurance with Celebrity.

Larry must have some bad luck because I'll be on my 10th cruise on Celebrity this August (our 3rd time on the Century) and we have yet to miss a port because of engine malfunction or the likes. I know I'm taking a risk by cruising to the Carib during hurricane season so I might miss a port or two this time because of weather.

The Century is a gorgeous ship. The service is great. You will love it.

You will love the Century. My wife and I sailed on her last November. The main dining room is beautiful and spacious. You can't beat the food either. We used to sit in the atrium area on the Promenade deck , get a drink from the Cova Cafe Milano, and watch all the people walk by. The ship had a very nice theater, very comfortable, with beautiful deep blue carpet. We hope to sail on her again some day.

I live in the Tampa Bay area, and I hope that if the Horizon is ever retired from service the Century will be relocated to Tampa. It would be great to sail the Century out of Tampa.

Relax and Enjoy!! We have been on the Century twice, we love Celebrity, (8 times going on 9 in Nov.) and lately even more so. They only get better and better. Say Hi to "Nicky" or I should say Capt. Nick, can't rememeber his last name, but he is a real sweetheart of a man.

I just returned home yesterday from he Century and loved the ship. Service was wonderful , food very good, shows not so great, but the "party" band, Xtasea ,was the best I've ever heard on a caribbean cruise.

Please e-mail me with specific questions.

We did A Peat Taylor tour in Jamaica and loved it.
