Default Is it true? Horizon is getting a facelift?

I thought I read somewhere that the Horizon was getting a interior facelift. Does anyone know about this?

I went on the Horizon to Bermuda last May and loved the intinerary, but the Horizon definately needs a little color to it's interior. The hallways are very bland and definately needs some artwork . Maybe they can borrow some of the funky artwork from Royal Caribbean...they are dripping in it and I love it!

According to information from the staff on my recent cruise on board Horizon is getting a "facelift" in October, I believe verandahs are being added and some interior fittings in some cabins are being changed around.

Meanwhile I thought the ship was very clean, very easy to get around and the staff were very friendly. Food was good , excellent service at dinner, but breakfast always seemed a bit haphard. Think they have less experieinced staff on at breakfast, as the choices are more limited then.

There are rumors that Horizon is getting verandas and also they are strecthing the ship. Both of these are not true at this point. Adding verandas is not something that is done in a one or two week downtime. It is a major undertaking.

A regular "cut and stretch" can be accomplished in around 30 days time. However, first the added section needs to be built. That takes a number of months. We would know as soon as RCL corporate announced selection of the shipyard to do the work.

With the current exchange rate Euro vs dollar.....not in the foreseeable future.

Adding balconies is a whole new undertaking... very expensive... and time consuming.. and requiring recertification of the ship.

Also heard that Enchantment (Royal) would be stretched with climbing wall added..It is my favorite & would hate to see it changed. Refurbishment & updating is one thing but cutting seems wrong--altho" I know Norwegian has done it.

It was previously announced by RCL corporate that the older RCL ships were going to have the rock climbing walls added. There was no announcement of stretching any RCL ship. By adding some of the amenities found on the newer Voyager and Radiance class...the older "Vision" class ships are now being updated to match their newer siblings.

Yes, Victoria got some new balconies. Her slab-sided design was easier to work with.. and her lifeboats are recessed. Horizon and Zenith are a little bit more difficult to work with. SOLAS is particular about lifeboat location, angles to the water.. and the like.
Also, H&Z have tiered decks which are a little more difficult to work with. Their lifeboats are not recessed.

Ideally, for H&Z to become "balconized", original hull and superstructures should remain the same, thus not effecting wind resistance.. and fuel economy. Cabin configurations would need to be changed (fewer cabins) and the new balconies carved out of existing cabin space... so the ships would have a sleek appearance.

The future cruise consultant on the Infinity in December stated that the Horizon was going to get some balconies and that the Century was to be stretched.. He gave no specific time frame.

During the ta/press 2-day festivities on Serendade of the Seas, Richard Fain stated that no stretching will be done in the foreseeable future due to the Euro-USD exchange rates.

Horizon has only it's normal drydock scheduled for routine work.

Well, something is apparently up. Passengers getting off the last Horizon sailing have seen some prototype work being done to two outside cabins during their cruise. Cabin 1074 (Cat 3) has gotten a facelift and is now sporting, of all things, a balcony! Cabin 4144 (Cat 6) is getting a facelift as well (no balcony). Photographs of these cabins have been provided courtesy of KreinKrunker at this URL--so no rumor here:

http://www.cruise-addicts.com/pictur...w.php?uid=2149

Now word that the passengers are getting from employees on the ship is that the cabins on Deck 10 will all be getting balconies during the dry dock scheduled for later this year (Nov?). Other changes to be made in drydock include extending America's Cup forward, changing the Zodiac to an alternative dining venue, enlarging the casino all the way across the ship, changing the Cova and shop areas around, and in general totally stripping the rooms. A passenger was also told that within five weeks, the present rooms would be rewired for more TV channels, internet access, etc. Another passenger heard that the bridge was being moved forward as well. Realize all this is still rumor, but the details are interesting and certainly something is up as evidenced by the ship's new cabin balcony!.

Just returned on the Horizon March 12. Was told by ship's officers the same alterations will be done as stated by MAHDNC. We had Cabin 1010 (Suite) Also saw the 2 balconies that were installed while underway.

Both Zenith & Horizon are to be completely rebuilt and essentially be new ships upon completion. Neither is being cut or lengthened. Every cabin will be gutted & rebuilt. Michaels Club & Library to be replaced with Specialty eating venue. Bridge moved forward on horizon to make more space. Balconies added to existing outside cabins. john

Hi Lee and Kelli- This is completely unrelated to cruising, but I just wanted to tell you, Kelli, that I spell my name the same way as you and it seems to be pretty rare. It's always nice to see someone who spells it the same! Happy Cruising!

OK. Is Horizon putting a specialty restaurant in Michael's Club/library/card room, one of the nicest areas of the ship, or is it putting it in the Zodiac club, essentially replacing the aft-located lounge? If I had to do one it would be Michael's Club, I'm very, very much against replacing any lounge with a restaurant, to me the spirit of cruising is in the lounges. I also think Michael's Club/library/card room is a wonderful area of the Horizon and I'm not sure if it's a good idea to replace this area with a restaurant--you know, the restaurant is used only sometimes, Michael's Club/library/card room can be used much more and are nice, intimate, and sumptously appointed areas of the ship, but in a public/lounge area, not a reservations-only area, effectively taking out a part of the ship in a for-pay eatery. I'm not against using the Zodia as a specialty restaurant IF, and only IF, it is a supper club, a restaurant easily doubling as a sophisticated lounge for dancing and entertainment. I guess America's Club can be a disco at night.

I'm not big on putting specialty restaurants in the Horizon or Century ships. Let the Millennium class have them and that be their draw. I think cruising is about enjoying lounges and varied public areas that are multipurpose on ships and making areas that are of limited use limits, not expands, the cruising experience. I think there's plenty of food on Horizon and Celebrity needs to refurbish and redesign the Horizon/Zenith's dining rooms, cabins, some corridors, upgrade the art, upgrade the shops, upgrade the Zodiac and Rainbow lounges, upgrade the main theaters. I don't mind the balconies but I'm not one that needs one on every ship. But, I'm totally against removing lounges for specialty restaurants. One of my biggest problems with the Millennium class ships, too few lounges, too few varied lounges in size/layout/design, no destination lounge, not intimate and inviting. And maybe Celebrity should consider that there are core cruisers that love the Horizon and Century class ships and will be around when the newness of the Millennium ships wears off. I'm not sure the Millennium ships will be that popular in a few years when they reach the current age of the Century class ships.
