Sailing in the Med May 9 and booked a tour to see the Acropolis. I really want to see this but I am concerned with the 150 steps they say you have to climb. I am 57 years old, not over-weight but that sounds like alot of stairs. Has anyone near or over my age done this? If so, how was it? The book says that you should be in excellent physical shape - I am in good shape but I don't know what their defination of "excellent" is.
My wife and I did it a couple of years ago. We're younger but I can tell you the steps are not steep and the guides provide you many oportunities to rest while they talk. Most of the people on the tour were in their 50's. Have fun!
Be very careful when you come down. There are no handrails. I witnessed one elderly gentleman fall about 20 feet on to hard rock. I do not know how badly he was hurt. It gets crowded going up and down from the Acropolis. The people going up are on the inside and the people coming down are on the outside and there is, as I said before no handrail. If your not paying attention you can fall off the cliff. The path is not very wide and it is difficult to get emergency aid up to the summit. They must not have as many lawyers in Greece as the USA.
My husband and I (67 and 64) and two ladies in their late 50's / early 60/s were there in October. It wasn't a problem at all. However we were on our own - not in a tour - so we could set our own pace.
There are steps and you can stop and rest and look about. I had heard the horror stories too, but there was no problem.
We don't smoke, but if you do, watch the cigarette police! One of our friends who went at a later time, lit a cigarette and got in trouble. Of course we thought that was funny. He had to use his hand for an ash tray and carry the butt around in his pocket.
I hope you have a glorious day and can see for miles when you go.
I was there in Sept of 2002, at that time was 50 years old..I agree with the other postings, it should be no problem but the stones can be slick so wear comfortable soul gripping shoes (or good sneakers), more problems coming down then going up and after about 10 am it's pure crowds, but once you get to the top, it's worth every step..fyi, will be curious if you post when you return about this topic..I am going in late june and just recently had a heart attack (last september)..gave a great trip
