Grateful for any advice on a guarantee rate. I am looking at a Galaxy Cruise in a suite. If I pick the guarantee rate from experience does that mean I'll get the worst suite available (after others paying a higher rate have been upgraded assuming there are spare suites) or the best?
Anyone had experience of this or is it all pot luck?
I have booked a guarantee (4) times out of my 17 cruises. Everytime except for once we received a better room than what we booked. On our last cruise on the Zuiderdam last month we booked a cheapo balcony guarantee, and were upgraded to a FULL SUITE "gratis!!!!" thanks to some dilegent work by my fabulous TA. The guy is awesome.
I have done this many times with mixed results. It's all about luck.
On the Ryndam two months ago I took an outside guarantee and got the very last cabin in the rear of the ship. It had lots of vibration and not very convenient. I was told most better rooms went to people with reserved cabins.
On the Star Princess last year, I was upgraded to a terrific cabin with a huge balcony. So what I think happens, they have the best (and most expensive) cabins and worst cabins often left over available late. So it's just luck. If I want a special cabin, I just book it.
As some one in the travel industry I would reccomend a guarantee - however be sure to advise your travel agent you want mid ship. They will make a note on your file at the cruise line to note that you are on a gaurantee but request mid ship. This can be done so you avoid getting the back of the ship. I do this on a daily basis for my clients, and in order to receive upgrades it is up to your Travel Agent to put in the request.
