Is Celebity better than Carnival?

We just returned from our first cruise on Carnival's Elation. We were very dissappointed!!!!! We travel alot but never wanted to do cruising, someone talked us into trying it and suggested we try an inexpensive, fun, ship to get the feel of cruising. Well, if that was what cruising was all about then I don't think it's for us. I felt like I was on a floating Howard Johnson. The people on board seemed like they had spent their last penny to do this cruise and had not done much other traveling. One night two women passengers had to be seperated after a punching brawl in the karaoke lounge! The food was horrible, the grill was so fly infested I was sick just walking by.(by the way, how does a fly get into the middle of the ocean?!?! ha ha)
I know I sound snobby, I'm sure some of you might bash me for that but the truth is we want a casual sophisticated cruise. One with good food, expemplory service, and exotic ports. We are willing to pay for what we expect. We just didn't expect such an eye opening experience on Carnival.
I have heard some good things about Celebrity but I don't know much about the ships themselves. Does this sound like a cruise line I would be interested in, if so, what ships? Thanks for listening to me vent....I just hate being an ass...

Just about any line is better than Carnival for the very reasons you note. I particularly like Princess - and haven't yet sailed on Celebrity but will be next April. Both have excellent reputations. Good food, good service, clean ships.

Re: Is Celebity better than Carnival?

I have sailed on Princess, Celebrity and a defunct line called Regency. Enjoyed the Grand Princess: above average food, nice service, excellent facilities and average stops. Sailed the on the Horizon: excellent food, excellent service, good facilities and above average ports. Will be sailing on the Celebrity Century in August. Both lines are very good and attract a middle/upper middle class crowd. Conde Noste Traveler continually rates Celebrity as the best of the mid priced cruise lines. I think you will be extremely happy with Celebrity-- and this is from a very picky traveler who has been around the world. I have yet to hear anything nice about Carnival except that it is cheap and if you are a swinger you'll find some action (LOL). You will thank me when you travel Celeb. Good voyage!

we want a casual sophisticated cruise

With this criteria I wouldn't think Celebrity would fit the bill either. Somewhat sophisticated.. yes, casual... not really.

To meet your criteria, you may want to look at Oceania cruises, or one of Radisson Seven Seas select "casual" cruises.

I've been on quite a number of Carnival cruises (as well as Celebrity, Princess etc) and I've honestly really never encountered more of the problems you mentioned on Carnival as I have the other lines.

Every sailing of every ship on all the major cruise lines can have different sorts of crowds.

We went on Carnival once, never again. Celebrity is wonderful, makes you feel relaxed and not that formal. Having gone on Celebrity 10 times. All different lengths , and never saw a brawl. If you don't want too many children go during the times they are in scholl and take a 10 or more day cruise. We love the M class of ship, big and so much to do or not. Food excellent (IMPO) Princess is our second favorite.

Re: Is Celebity better than Carnival?

Princess or Celebrity would probably do nicely for you. I would lean towards celebrity. If you are considering princess, I would stay away from the Grand class ships.

If you have the means and you want to be really pampered, you may also want to consider crystal/radisson/silversea but I would not consider that "casual".

I think you'd love Celebrity. I've been on the Century twice and am planning to go again this next year. Took some first time cruisers with us in April and they don't even want to try any other cruise line. They'll be going with us again next year. The food is awesome and the presentation unbelievable. The crew makes you feel so special and they are all very helpful and friendly. It's a classy ship but you can feel confortable in shorts or casual clothes too. Most do really dress for the formal nights. All our guys wore tuxes and we gals dressed to the nines. Found it to be a lot of fun. I can't think of one negative about the Century !!!

Carnival vs Celebrity is like hamburger vs steak. Give Celebrity a try. Princess would be my (distant) second choice.

Re: Re: Is Celebity better than Carnival?

Love the hamburger vs steak analogy!

We completely agree. We have sailed on both and much prefer Celebrity.

Give it a try!

Re: Is Celebity better than Carnival?

Reading this thread strikes me as a good reason to find a good travel agent who specializes in cruises.

With a posting such as this people are rather naturally going to give "their opinions" of their favorite cruise line.

But.... it seems to also serve as an example of the differences one might find between a travel agent, and a "good" travel agent.

- the first agent might recommend a cruise line or a ship that they themselves enjoyed, or have had good reports from returning clients.
And on the surface that might seem like they are doing a good job.

- However the really good agent would communicate with you to find out what your preferences are, and suggest a ship that most closely matches the criteria you set out, rather than steer you to their personal favorites.

Re: Is Celebity better than Carnival?

We've sailed the Celebrity Millenium last year (our first cruise), and loved it! Gorgeous ship, elegant, excellent food, and we even had a butler who was happy to accomodate any of your requests (e.g. my 7 year old son absolutely felt like having a strawberry ice cream after dinner, but there was none to be had..or so it seemed, until I called our butler and he showed up with one for each of us!)

Celebrity attracts 30s-70s crowd in general, I think. We went during the spring break, so there were quite a few kids on board, but it didn't detract from the "casual elegance" atmosphere. They have pretty good kids program--keeps them entertained.

We're an active family, and generally prefer to do lots of land activity; but despite that, we're sailing on Celebrity Century on July 31! The whole experience on the Millenium was so wonderful, that we're trying it out again. I'm 99% confident that we'll love this cruise too. Celebrity keeps its ships spotless at ALL TIMES! I'm not kidding. I don't think you'll have any issues with their cuisine--it was just fabulous! (and we live in San Francisco Bay Area, where we've sampled plenty of fine cuisines--just so that you know we don't live on McD burgers all the time and have some fine steaks periodically).

Try Celebrity--you won't be disappointed!

Re: Re: Is Celebity better than Carnival?

Your sailing in August huh? Are you on the Eastern or Western Caribbean itenerary? I am sailing with my wife and some friends on the Eastern Sailing on the 21st. I agree with you, Celebrity is a great cruise line choice, have sailed twice on Century, and have the mercuy to mexico scheduled for Feb 2005.

If you want a 7 day party sail on Carnival, their name is synonomous with what they offer, a carnival.

Celebrity's name as well does it justice. You feel like a celebrity, with a sophistication and class usually associated with the celebrity genre.

Happy sailing

Celebrity is far superior to Carnival with regards to food, service, quietness, etc and has an older crowd than Carnival. *** edited by moderator to remove commercial message***

Don't judge all cruises by Carnival standards.

Re: Is Celebity better than Carnival?

We have been on both lines. I got to say that we are the opposite, we like Carnival better. Maybe its our age, we just didnt find much that interested us and were bored alot. I dont think the food is bad on Carnival. Steaks are better on Celebrity I would say. I found we had better service on Carnival. Everyone has a differnt experience. Our head waitress on Carnival took the time to learn our names and would talk to us. They were very impersonal on Celebrity other than our bar steward. She was sweet and came by and chatted about how our day was anytime she seen us. Carnival is not for everyone, but I think they are a good line for the money. Good luck, you probally would like Celebrity.

Re: Is Celebity better than Carnival?

I'm somewhat of a different voice. The original poster sailed aboard a Fantasy class Carnival ship. While I haven't sailed aboard any Carnival ships because of their style and decor, there are quite a few veteran cruisers familiar with Celebrity who report that the newer Carnival ship's cuisine meets or exceeds Celebrity's. Also, that Celebrity's cuisine is declining and steadily where Carnival is going the other direction. These days, I would say, do not expect great food on Celebrity. Expect standard banquet-quality "cruisine".

As far as the cruise. I don't know. At one time Celebrity was marketed to a somewhat discerning cruise passenger that expected to dress for dinner and desired it, didn't ask questions about smuggling liquor aboard, and the like. The ships were mostly fill of Celebrity cruisers. Now, the ships are marketed toward a general mass market passenger and Celebrity has become a value line. You are likely to find a lot of general cruisers onboard, they could be on Princess on one cruise, Carnival the next, RCI the next and Celebrity the next. Some don't even care what ship they are on. Just that they have a balcony and a large casino.

I don't know if any of the major lines truly offer a "better" overall product than the other anymore.

Re: Is Celebity better than Carnival?

I have jumped ship only once on about 26 cruises.
I have enjoyed all the rest of them. I have been on
the Carnival- Carnivale, Holiday and Paradise
I have been on the Royal Cruise Lines (now defunct)
Crown Odyssey and Royal Odyssey ( old Royal Viking Sea)
I have sailed Fairsky, Stella Oceanus and Stella Solaris,
Sagafjord (Sana Rose) and Vistafjord (Caronia)
Celebrity- Horizon, Summit, Infinity (x2) Constellation and Millennium.
Left the SS Veracruz in Vera Cruz Mexico because the couple that I was
traveling with were unhappy with the food and accommodations. It was
cruise that was for a benefit.
Sailed the Sun Viking in the Orient also.
Still, I am happy to say that I have never encountered the problems that you
seemed to run into.
It must have been some mismanagement that you encountered, and hope
you will not let this turn you off on cruising.

Carnival is the bulk cruising experience that is what cruising should not be about, go Celebrity it is worth the money and you will have a great vacatation, its special.

There is no need to bash other Cruise Lines.

My wife and I have sailed on Celebrity for our Honeymoon and Carnival the last 2 summers. We like both lines. Each one is different and trying to compare the two is like comparing apples and oranges. There is more Carnival bashing on this board then there is Celebrity bashing on the Carnival board. Some of you are truly snobs, and I don't mean it in the nice way. Just because Carnival doesn't give you the refined experience that Celebrity gives you, it doesn't mean that Celebrity is any better then any other line.

Sorry if this is harsh, but it's the way I feel.

Bottom line is that you get what you pay for. While I prefer Celebrity, I will use Carnival if I like the itierary. I have met wonderful people on both lines and have not encountered any on the problems that you described.

Re: Is Celebity better than Carnival?

I think if you polled 100 people from every cruise you you get a very different opinion of the cruise from every one of them. I think there are people who are capable of having a great vacation no matter what and there are people who will never be happy no matter what. So its my opinion that the blame for a bad vacation lies squarely with the individual. Even when problems do arise, and they will, one should not "throw the baby out with the bath water"

Celebrity if far better than Carnival. We actaully won a 4 day cruise on the Elation. It has the cruise from hell! When you are used to having class, try the ships I suggest. DO NOT give up on cruising, just don't go on Carnival again. We have done 7 cruises and our fav is HAL, Celebrity and RRCL.
Bon Voyage!

Re: Is Celebity better than Carnival?

I've been on Celebrity, Carnival and HAL. I think you are more likely to run into first time cruisers on Carnival - I don't know why TA's seem to push the inexperienced cruiser toward Carnival - at least that's what happened to us. If you take age and expectations into consideration, you should be able to find the right cruise for yourself. We loved the Celebrity experience - excellent service, food and accomodations - and have met wonderful people on Celebrity - some younger than us (50's). I don't think you're likely to see any brawls on HAL - we found a mostly senior group of very genteel, experienced travelers who were delightful to converse with. I may cruise again on Carnival, although I don't care for the constant announcements on their PA system. I say, try all the cruise lines! Happy cruising!

Re: Is Celebity better than Carnival?

After somewhere around 100 cruises, I will state once again, that the very best, and the very worst cruises we have ever had have both been on CARNIVAL. The worst one was so bad that we got 100% refund, and an apology from a VP. In any case, we sail all the lines, but prefer CELEBRITY, or PRINCESS, but will book CARNIVAL again, in a heartbeat, if the price is right. Try all the lines, and make up your own mind about what you do, and don't like, and whether the price of the "premium" lines is worth the difference, or whether you'd rather take that money, and do another cruise instead!
Happy sailing,
Ken

Re: Is Celebity better than Carnival?

I have ask my travel agent, who specializes in cruises only, to never never every booked me on a Carnival cruise again. We had sailed other line before and certainly others after and I understand your reason. Our mistake as well, it was spring break and a brawl would have been an improvement. One cabin of four young men got so drunk and stick we didn't see them the rest of the cruise. The ship had propulsion failure. We were standing on the balcony and dodge a cocktail glass dropped from above. We were told NO more times than we can remember by staff and room steward and also where to get our own ice for the cabin. Please give Celebrity or Princess or NCL a try, you deserve a second chance to enjoy true cruising.

Re: Re: Is Celebity better than Carnival?

Interesting that everyone has the attitude about Carnival. We went on two family friendly winter break cruises with no evidence of too much drinking, rowdiness, wild parties. We had a great time on both cruises regardless of the neon.

Yet last January we were on the Golden Princess and our neighbours next door (20 somethings) decided to host a party in their cabin and on their balcony. At 3am someone from another cabin asked them to keep it down, they apologized and immediately pumped up the volume of their CD's. I recall one particularly annoying and very grating laugh from one of their guests. We called the front desk and within minutes there was banging at their door to shut the party down. This one incident would of course not stop me from cruising Princess again.

Our next cruise is Celebrity and will be interesting to see if any difference. I am pretty sure you need to try a few lines to see which one works best for you. That's at least what we plan on doing.

I have not found one Carnival Vessel that is acceptable. Once you sail Royal Carribbean Cruise Lines(RCCL) you'll NEVER go back to Carnival!

Re: Is Celebity better than Carnival?

A punching brawl in the Karaoke lounge? Now, that is someone who gets real upset over the lack of talent. That's just part of the Entertainment (LOL). When we were on MIllenium, some older folks came close to having a fist fight over 'saved' seats. I thought it would be funny to see them rolling around on the floor.

After 2 Celebrity cruises, a Royal Caribbean cruise, and a Carnival cruise, my judgement is... I love them ALL
