Satellite phone
Anyone ever taken a satellite phone on your cruise? We're considering renting one because we have a business that we have to be in contact with. Just wondering how they worked.

Re: Satellite phone
For a variety of reasons I travel with a satellite phone. Mine is the type with the antenna, and will only work if you are outdoors. But... I have called from all over the world, including from a ship out at sea, with it, and never really had any problems.

Re: Satellite phone
I personally have never used one but on the last cruise that I went on in March I remember seeing one gentleman a few times on the upper deck talking on a sat phone. It didn't seem that he was having any problems with the connection....his conversation sounded pretty steady without any "can you hear me now?".......after all it is working off of a satellite. I would say as long as it's cheaper than using the ship's phone then by all means rent one. Good luck and enjoy yourself.

Re: Re: Satellite phone
Can anyone offer any advice on renting one? I've seen places on the internet that rent them, but I wasn't sure if that was the best place. Unfortunately, having reliable communication with our business back home is the only way we're going to be able to get away on a cruise.

Re: Satellite phone
Not really sure......maybe try a wireless store in your local area or if applicable try a marine store like West Marine. I live in Florida and they rent EPIRB's out...not sure about phones but worth a shot. If not I guess search the web. Good luck!

I dont know how much they charge you to rent phones or where you would even go to rent a can buy a tracfone ( and how many minutes you want.I have one that we got at Target, but many store have them.It works great.I think they have one for around $30 or so and then you can buy your mins.I only use mine in case of an emergency (or so I said when I got it..l.) But,you might want to check into this.Dot

Re: Satellite phone
I just got back from my cruise and my tracfone worked better than my brothers cell phone! I let him use mine several times! Mine worked better on the ship than it does here in Houston! Dot

What did you end up doing? We also have a business that we must be in contact with. I am also looking into satellite phones for a cruise. I know this is a very old post!

Since 2005 there is no need for a satellite phone while on a cruise ship or even in a foreign port.

Check with your provider and see what International and Cruise Ship packages they have. I have Verizon and they have reasonable rates for Cruise Ships, Mexico and other International plans that will give you 500 minutes talk, 500 text and 1GB of data for $25. If you exceed that then they just charge you another $25 and you get another 500 minutes talk, 500 texts and 1GB of data.

I've done this all over the world and on most cruise ships. It's a lot more economical than the satellite phone which will cost you a couple hundred dollars , minimum.

Many cruise lines/ships also have more high speed data that will allow you to do a number of online tasks except stream video.

Technology has changed in the last 11 years.

Take care,
