Default experience with Denrus tour company in Russia

If anyone has had any experience with the Denrus tour group could they share the good and bad. Also, does anyone know how they compare with the Red October Tour Group?

THank you.

I've used both companies on two seperate visits to St Petersburg, and both were good.

I found it easier to customize our tours on the fly using DenRus. Though for musuems and palaces you really need appointments, so you don't have to wait. Seeing some of the "behind the scenes" St Pete was easier to do with DenRus.

We used Denrus last season for our tours of St. Petersburg and can't say enough about them. They were simply excellent. Very easy to deal with ahead of time with emails answered within 24 hrs. always. I can't say enough about them. If going again, we surely would use them again.

Thank you so much for your reply. I actually just confirmed with them today. They seem very flexible and are arranging the tour with some of the variations that we have requested.

We are really looking forward to this trip!

They were very accomodating with any changes we chose to make. I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time using them. Are you doing Lunch with a Russian Family? That was quite an experience for us.

In July 2000 we used this group which were certainly more accommodating than the ships tours.

I'm working with DenRus right now. I tried Red October and found them pushy and unfriendly.

Where and when are you going?

We are going on the Celebrity Cruise on 6/27. We will be in St. Petersburg on 7/3 and 7/4. How about you?

So far Denrus has been very good to work with. Originally we were looking at a tour for just ourselves (me, husband, and 2 daughters) but we may now join up with some others on this same cruise.

We used Denrus when we were in St. Petersburg last year and we were really happy with them. We felt that we wee really able to capitalize on the time we had in the port. Several of us got together and organized 3 vans with 8 to 10 people per van. Each van had a driver and guide (with very good English). I have deleted the e-mails between Denrus and us so I can't give you names but if you e-mail them you will get a quick response.

Default experience with Denrus tour company in Russia

I am also interested in maybe persuing a DenRus tour on our cruise in June.
Here are my questions
1) Do they carry a group visa like Celebrity or do we need to file for Russian visas? I know DenRus' website says they do, but I don't want to send them $500 only to find out this is not the case and we can't use our tour.
2) Any experiences in breakdowns or arriving back to the ship later than scheduled? Talked to my TA and she said if on the second day the tour group had a breakdown and we arrived back to the ship late, we would be screwed as far as catching back up to the ship. All though if we had the same thing happen with a Celebrity tour, that the boat would wait for the tour group. Of course she said that using secondary tour people (locals) really is the best way to go because you see more and it costs much less but to solicit advise from people who have used the local tour company first.
We are looking at The Grand St. Petersburg tour from DenRus NOT the private ones.
Thanks for any insights you have
Jay

Maybe you have already received your info as we are into June, but DenRus is great. Yes, you do not need a Russian visa when you go with them. A few tour operaters are designated by the government to be able to use a group Visa -- DenRus and Red October are the only ones I know about. We didn't pay anything until we arrived, so not sure about your need to anti up $500 pre-tour, but maybe something has changed since our May 2005 tour. The van we had was new -- the only thing I worried about was being stuck by a train that transverses the avenue in the port area. Just watch your time and get them going if you are concerned. I was highly pleased -- a great guide and driver. Be sure to ask to do the subway on your private tour -- wow -- chandeliers, art work in a subway!
