Default summit cruise 4/9-4/23/06

Hi everyone,
Just returned from our Hawaii cruise on the Summit. We had a wonderful time. Met new friends who we will stay in touch with. The entertainment was outstanding as all Celebrity cruises have been. I will now mention some negatives, not because we were unhappy but just to let people know . If people have trouble standing they have to be prepared.
We arrived at the Port of Los Angeles at noon time (ship was to sail at 5:00). We drove, the parking lots were already full and we had to find an auxilly lot. We did drop off our luggage first and there was a shuttle to take us back.
Apparently know one was being allowed on the ship because it needed additional cleaning (sterilization). the line in the sun was unbelievable. Water was provided and some snacks. We wouldn't have stood on the line if we knew they weren't letting anyone on. Two hours on line we made it into the terminal. Once inside it was a quick process. the staff indicated the extra cleaning was the cause , but then some blamed the Security at the Port instead.
The day before we were to disembark, we were given our usual colored tags, information that every passenger had to report to immigration in the theatre (even though most were U.S. citizens and we never left the country(except for the stop in Ensenada where it was an hour and no one got off) .Also instructiions as where to wait(we were Concierge) afterwards. We were told to report at 8:50 and depart time approx. 9:30. Well, during the show we were told the ship was getting in 1 1/2 hours late and add that to your time. Also additional information would be sent to our cabins. there was no additional infor. sent Well, needless to say it appears that no one listened to instructions but us. We went to report at the new time and the whole ship was in line. It went starting at the theatre , the full length of the deck to the restaurant and circled around a few times. We stood in line a hour and half , our color to exit ship, was called, surprisingly at the original 9;30 time. We exited the ship at 11.30 .
There was no shuttle to the far parking lot so my husband walked all the way there and I waited with the luggage. There were people talking about the mass confusion on disembarking but really no anger was noted. The passengers were really nice.
Just a little note further, it was announced that our cruise had no cases of noro virus. Apparently all the cleaning they did prior to our boarding helped. Also in the buffet lines we were served. Toward the end of the cruise in some food areas we served ourselves.
I think that the security at the Port of Los Angeles was the culprit in our leaving the ship. Never have we cruised within or outside of the country did we have to report to immigration (everyone). We cruise to Mexico often out of San Diego and never has this occured.

Happy sailing
Gloria S.

We had the same disembarkation problem when we returned 1/29. We were late coming into LA but the port didn't have a dock for us. And yes, we did have to go thru customs even though we are US citizens and never left the ship in Ensanada.

Luckily for us, we were one of the first people down there @ 6:30 and stood in line for an hour so we were one of the first ones to go thru customs, but there were still people in line when we were getting off the ship. Why they couldn't let people into the theatre and sit them in the same order? People had not had breakfast and were getting faint but were afraid to leave their place in line for fear of missing their flights.

Obviously Celebrity has not found a way to handle this situation even though it is repeated every trip!

Hi Winner,
I fully expected to pass through immigration but not on a crowded ship where everyone got the time to report wrong and new directions were not delivered to our cabins as promised. The line was unbelievable. Once in the theatre we had to go down stairs with no hand rails carrying all our carry on bags . then on to the stage, more stairs, exiting a side door on the floor below. There was no leaving anything behind. We have been on four cruises after 9/11 and this never occured. We were on the Mercury in October, and all we did was walkoff when our color was called. We reported to the indicated lounge and was escorted off. We had been to Mexico.
We had a wonderful cruise on the Summit despite the confustion at the beginning and the end so this is not really a complaint just a warning to folks with problems standing.

To old man,
The food was not the best. The fish couldn't be eaten. No matter what kind of fish you ordered, it was poached. Most of the meat dishes were good. However one night my husband's steak had large arteries in it, with blood in it. Very disgusting. We had table mates who sent their food back every night.
There were some outstanding meals. The lobster was excellant, all the lamb meals were very good. We did hear a lot of complaining about the food . It really just wasn't up to the Celebrity standards but still better than most cruise lines.

Gloria S.. After reading your post on the food with blood and you can't eat the fish how can you then say it was better that most cruise lins?? I have been on a lot of cruises and all of them were better than what you discribe for the food on the Celebrity. Your post tells me that the food was very bad.. Not better than other cruise lines.. On what cruise lines did you find worse food than the Celebrity food?? OM

We were on the 4/9 LA/Hawaii Circle on Summit also. Our 4th time on Summit.

Yes, the waiting at the pier was a pain. But things happen. Celebrity personnel were (IMHO) doing the best they could considering the situation. Once we were admitted to the terminal building (we also were booked in a CC cat. cabin and are Elite Capt. Club members), we were comfortable waiting to board the ship - we were only in line out of doors not more than 45 minutes - we must have been among the more fortunate passengers.

Re the disembarkation: I really can't remember whether we had to clear immigration prior to disembarking the ship each and every cruise we've been on - but I do remember standing in line on several cruises to clear immigration - and the lines were loooooong. I agree though: we've NEVER had to walk UP ON TO the stage in the theater to present our docs! I couldn't believe that - what an inconvenience with the carry-ons, etc.!

IMHO the food was Celebrity. Not much difference from what we've experienced on Millie, Infinity and previous Summit cruises. We had fish one night that was excellent - tender and flaky....then the next night it was awful - couldn't even cut it with a knife! However, the steaks we had were, for the most part, very good - I've rarely gotten a bad steak on a Celebrity ship. Having said that: After a couple of days of the breakfast and lunch buffets, I'm tired of these two meals and will do with something very simple and light. Don't like having to make myself "presentable" to do breakfast and lunch in the main dining room.

We, too, enjoyed this cruise - the weather on the Islands couldn't have been better.
