Default Interesting Occurence at Beginning of Baltic Cruise

Just returned from a Baltic cruise on the Constellation. We spent a couple of days in London prior to the cruise. When we were leaving our hotel to board the coach our cruise agent had booked, we were told that there had been a last minute change of plans for our port of embarkation, which was supposed to be Dover. The Constellation had to go to Harwich instead. Because of low tides, the Dover port was too shallow for her. Most people who had made their own travel arrangements to Dover didn't find this out until they arrived at Dover. Fortunately, Celebrity sent a number of coaches there to transfer those people to Harwich. Needless to say, it made for late arrivals by many and delayed sailing for an hour or so. First time I've heard of something like this happening.

You're right -- such occurrances are very unusual. Normal tdes are very predictable well in advance, so the cruise lines can schedule arrivals and departures based upon tidal conditions. Nonetheless, unforeseeable circumstances such as unusual rainfall that silted up the channel or weather than interfered with planned dredging operations might have made the window for entering and leaving port much narrower than nromal.

Norm.
