Default Key West, Florida

We are sailing out of Miami on April 12th on Century. First stop is Key West on the 13th (Friday..eek!). We only have about 7 hours in Key West. What should we do? Walking tour? Hit the local bars?

A walking tour is good although I would take one of the trolleys if you have never been there. They will take you all over the island with places you can get on and off at will. They will also explain many of the oddities of the island. A lot may also depend on what type of excursions your ship offers. Key West is not the best spot for beaches but we did a nice catmaran trip with snorkeling out of there. There are several museums if interested and Harry Trumans summer White House. Hitting the bars is good since Ernest Hemingway appears to have stopped at all of them and of course you can try Key Lime Pie. A walking tour is interesting also since there are a lot of unusual shops in Key West.

dkj has it nailed. IMO the absolute best thing about Key West is that every, and I mean every little bar has GREAT entertainment inside. Yes, there is a lot of historical stuff to see too, so take a look around first, then hit the bars. Watch out for the chickens, and the six toed cats.
Key West is a great port IMO

See you aboard,

Ken

Key West is my favorite port! Be sure to either take the Conch train or the Trollley. Ask about the "Secret Garden". It's a nice place to visit. Several times we have rented the electric "cars" on the island and had a great time exploring. You are only allowed to stay on the Old side of KW but that's where you want to be! I think renting the Electric cars is worth the price. We will be going in April to KW and plan to visit either the Mel Fishers Museum or Hemmingway House (to see the 6 toe'd cats). Don't bother with Ripplies - not worth the time.

You have gotten some great advice. The trolly or conch train is a must so you can get on and off. I think the trolly lets you on and off but not the conch train. Could be wrong about that. Sloppy Joe's is the most famous bar and it is a must.. There is a sandal shop where they hand make leather sandals all prices. Take a look in there. Nice souveniors (spel) for folks back home. Have a conch fritter and boja's (spel) these are black eye peas peeled and fried look like a ball or hush puppy. Very good snack. Actually 7 hours is enough time to see the entire island.
