Default Celebrity Millenium or Royal Caribbean Liberty?

Hello,

New to these boards...sailed on Celebrity Mercury in 1999, haven't cruised since. We are planning a spring Caribbean cruise for next April.

We loved the Mercury--back in 1999, Royal Caribbean was still very moderate, it looks like they're upped their game, so we're considering them too. I'm impressed with the new ships, the photos of them look very cool. We will probably not use any skating rinks, boxing rings, or surf simulators, but a good gym is important. I also like that they have a wrap around jogging track.

I've heard that Celebrity's food is not as good as it used to be, putting them on an equal par with RC. I also wish they had a wrap around deck to jog on. However, we were impressed with the more refined atmosphere. We're in our mid-30's, but we're not party animals.

The prices between these two cruises are almost equal.

So.....any opinions? Can you help us choose? T

It's really a question of personal style and taste. Celebrity Cruises is still a much more "upscale" product than Royal Caribbean International, and rumors of radical changes at Celebrity seem to be malicious with no basis in reality. If you liked Celebrity in 1999, you won't be disappointed now.

Nobody on this board can say whether you would gain more enjoyment from a cruise with Celebrity Cruises or a cruise with Royal Caribbean International. It's very much a question of personal style. Statistically, Royal Caribbean's demographics are a few years younger on average but both lines' demographics are so broad that the difference in the average is not really significant.

You also should be aware that Celebrity has eliminated the fee for enrollment in the Captain's Club, so you can enroll now and receive the member benefits to which your past cruises would entitle you.

If you want a long walking/jogging route, consider the ships of the Millennium Class rather than the older ships. The walking/jogging track on the ships of the Millennium class is still topside (on the deck above the pool) rather than a wrap-arounds on the Promenade Deck, but it goes around the entire aft funnel area as well as around the pool so it's considerably longer than the track aboard MV Mercury. The spas on these ships also have all the latest in fitness equipment and facilities.

Norm.

Those of us who say Celebrity's food isn't as good as it used to be are comparing to the food served in Celebrity's early years.
As prices of cruises went down - especially in comparison to earnings (we can cruise now for less then or the same price as we did back in the early 90's but it is actually a smaller percentage of our salaries), it seems like cuts were made - both in food and other areas. But this is not unique to Celebrity. There are postings on all cruiselines complaining about the same thing.

I'd stick with Celebrity if you liked the more refined atmosphere. The Millie has a more spacious feel and although it lacks some of the physical activities of RCL ships, it has a fabulous (free) aquaspa and a lot of quiet nooks and crannies.

My only major criticism of the Millie-class ships is that the kitchen is located so far from the dining room that dinner takes forever, almost an hour longer than on older Celeb. ships. If you have a great table, this isn't too bad; otherwise, make alternate plans for dinner or else be prepared to endure some waiting.

I have sailed both Celebrity Millennium & Constellation and Royal Caribbean Radiance (X2) in the past 2 years. I am late 40s and I found RC a much more pleasing experience than Celebrity. The food was way better on RC and none of the Celebrity staff seemed to be happy campers. On shore excursion shuttles, constantly heard Celebrity crew complaining about conditions. RC folks on the other hand, really seemed to like their jobs and ship and helping passengers. The difference was very noticeable. RC ships also have a much more intuitive layout.
