Default Hawaii tendered ports

Since this is my first cruise, Please can anyone tell me how long it takes to get off the ship when we first arrive in Maui, as i see this port is tendered? Also is it tendered only between certain hours?
Thank you, Lynne

By way of background, Lahaina is a "tender" port because it does not have a pier or warf that can accommodate the ship. Commercial shipping to and from Maui actually uses the port of Kahului, which is on the north side of the island, but Lahaina has a much richer history and a lot more attractions for tourists than Kahului. Anyway, the ship must anchor in the harbor and her tenders (boats that carry about 150 people) to transport passengers and crew going ashore between the ship and the tender landing. This operation obviously will last the entire duration of the port of call.

Now, the time required to go ashore depends upon many factors such as the number of tenders available, the time required for the transit between the ship's assigned anchorage and the tender landing, and the number of people ahead of you in the queue. When more passengers are waiting to go ashore than the capacity of a tender, Celebrity uses a "tender pass" system to take passengers ashore on a "first come, first served" basis, with two exceptions.

>> 1. The ship's shore excursions have first precedence for the tenders departing the shop at their scheduled times of departure. Passengers on shore excursions meet in a different location from which the shore excursion staff escorts them to their assigned tenders.

>> 2. Passengers in suites and "elite" members of Celebrity's "Captain's Club" receive priority passes to go ashore that provide "head of the line" privileges after the shore excursions.

Now, the practical reality is that an onslaught of passengers wanting to go ashore immediately upon arrival usually forms a queue when the staff start handing out tender passes. Shore excursions going ashore will back up this queue during the period when most of the shore excursions are going ashore, causing it to reach a peak of perhaps an hour. Once the majority of shore excursions get ashore, the queue dissipates very quickly.

If you really want to get ashore expeditiously in a tender port, the best option is to book a shore excursion -- even a short one. In Lahaina, either the excursion named "A Walking Tour through Lahaina's Past" or the excursion named "Maui Whale Watch" would leave most of your day open.
