Default Looking for Santiago, Chile ideas

Seeking an experienced South American cruisers travel wisdom! Anyone have suggestions about how to kill the 12-15 hours between disembarkation in Valparaiso and flying out of Santiago? Cruise excursions start at $189 pp and are not very imaginative. Has anyone had experience with the logistics of getting from the port to the airport, checking luggage 12 hours early and spending the time with a private guide or local tour....even a recommended hotel room close to the airport?

Thanks!
Lynne

The port of Valparaiso is a considerable distance from the airport at Santiago, the cost of a basic transfer probably is a good portion of the $189 per person for the tour. Also, Santiago is not exactly an area known for beign a tourist haven so sightseeing and other attractions probably are relatively limited. In reality, the transfer tour package probably is your best option.

And best of all, with the transfer tour package, you won't have to worry about your luggage. The tour operator will take care of it for you until the transfer tour arrives at the airport.

Norm.

Marcelo is from Chile and get you set up with a good guide. He can give you the prices. I think it would be cheaper with a foursome but with luggage that would be enough.
It is 80 miles from the port to Santiago.
Maybe a wine tour on the way if it is not a Sunday or a holiday.
In Santiago there is a local market tour that is nice. Not the tourist market, but the real one.
There is a nice gondola ride to the top of Cristobal hill if the weather is nice and good clear viewing.
A missionary church area that I have forgotten the name of.

You have your driver stay with the vehicle to watch the luggage while you go and have a look see. You could have a driver and an English speaking guide that we had once. This is best and safest so the guide can talk and give you info and the driver can pay attention to driving.
