Default Short Century review

We just returned from a short Century cruise, Key West and Cozumel.
This is after a several year hiatus from Celebrity. We stuck to RC to
get to our Diamond status.

It was good to be back onboard a more low key environment...no
announcements to speak of (no reminders of bingo 20 times a day)
Service was excellent as usual, tho this trip particularly non-personal.
Only talked to our cabin steward the first day...no complaints, we're
just used to seeing him more out and about the hallways. Waiter and
asst. waiter were good, tho except for the last night..the waiter didn't
go out of his way asking how we liked the entree, etc.

Now...on this cruise there was not a choice at least for us as to tips.
They were added to our sea pass acct. We didn't even get a voucher
to give to waiter, etc. It all seemed alittle impersonal. On the other
hand..there was a huge amount of "higher up" staff all out and about
the ship...overseeing bartenders, pool bar service, etc. This seemed to
contribute to a cleaner than usual ship (you were hardly done with a
drink or napkin when they walked by and wisked it away), and very
orderly, quick service.

The typically excellent Celebrity food I think has slipped a bit. Lots of
choices in the buffet..i.e. pasta bar, stir fry bar, sandwiches, and
the usual salads and entrees. yes, desserts were of less quantity than
we've seen on other ships, but this didn't bother us. Formal night
my husband had what he called the best rack of lamb he's ever nad
on a cruise ship...so there were some very high spots. I had a particularly
chewy steak...so probably just a bad choice. Sides also weren't
as good as before.

After being on much larger ships of late, there were just fewer
people at one time in an area...especially the buffet, sunset bar area, etc.
Seating was always available.

The ship and our cabin were in excellent shape after the somewhat
recent renovation. Cabin was small, but the flat screen TV on the wall
helped...and there was a huge amount of storage.

All in all...loved the cruise.

PS: RC diamond perks are non existent. Just priority boarding line,
which everyone uses, and priority disembarkation, which was nice.
no coupon book, no gift in the cabin, and of course which we knew...no
concierge lounge....our favorite.

Will we travel on Celebrity again..you bet.

Oh yes...Loved the Martini Bar.

Any specific questions, let me know.

Lou

Sounds like Celebrity has changed the tipping policy. Last Feb. on the Constellation, I noticed after the first day that gratuities were NOT being added to our seapass, so inquired at the front desk when they would be. The response was very indignant "Madam, tipping is optional-we would never assume to charge your sea pass automatically. We need your permission first". So they've had a change of heart :o

New Policy went into effect in Jan. Here is the policy...

Gratuities
For your convenience, we will automatically add gratuities for your restaurant and stateroom services to your onboard Seapass account on a daily basis in the following amounts, which may be adjusted at your discretion: $11.50 per person per day for guests in staterooms ($12.00 per person per day for guests in Concierge Class and AquaClass staterooms and $15.00 per person per day for guests in Suites). These service gratuities are based on the following recommended amounts:

We do like having the gratuities added to the Seapass, but not the
fact that we can't have an envelope for the waiter, cabin steward,
etc. It was just a personal touch to shake their hand and thank
them for their service. Just makes it more impersonal.

I think that the new tip policy went into effect because of the Solstice class ship with all the different dining venues.

The Century is my favorite ship. If they are not giving envelopes with your prepaid chit in them, how can you give them extra at the end of the cruise? I realize you could just hand it to them, but that isn't very classy. Besides at the end of your cruise, they are all out and about to collect their envelopes, so it is easy to slip in something extra -- I am not going to try to track someone down to give them more. I really do not like forced pre pay, even though always have it added to my account, because I think service degrades.

Last year on the Connie we "gave them permission" to add the gratuities to the seapass, which they did on the 3rd. day. 2 or 3 days before the end of the cruise, I requested some envelopes because we wanted to tip the cabin attendant and the waiter a little extra. Low and behold,on the day before the cruise ended, envelopes were delivered to our cabin. So obviously they are expecting you to tip over and above what goes on the seapass. We didn't make an issue of it, although there were quite a few complaining at the front desk!

On other cruises when we prepay, there are slips of paper provided by
the cruiseline to put in the envelopes. I'm guessing this was not the
case with you?

Sorry Lou, don't quite understand. Slips of paper? What would be the purpose of them?

It was a voucher for tip paid to cabin steward, waiter, asst. waiter, etc.
you put the voucher in the envelope and added more cash if you
wanted to...sorry, I didn't explain it well.

I get it- not a bad idea. On our upcoming cruise in Dec. we have prepaid gratuities. Not sure how that works but we'll still add to it if it's warranted. The suggested gratuities have gone up since we booked in Jan. so don't know if our agent will spring for the new rates or not.
Still a good deal though. But still could get nailed for a fuel surcharge the way things are headed!
