I would have to disagree that there is any difference in the passengers on any mainstream or so called "premium" cruise lines. IMHO, how anyone, especially after just one cruise on a cruise line, could paint a group of cruisers with such a broad brush is truly amazing. I have sailed Celebrity and Princess a total of about twenty times and have never found noticed any such difference in the passengers that I have met on either line.

I do agree with Don that the past passenger program on Celebrity, for years, falls far short of what all other mainstream cruise lines have been offering. That said, this small improvement is a big step for Celebrity management to at least begin to show some appreciation for past passengers and that is a good thing.

Everyone has their priorities on cruise line selection but for me the perks offered by the past passenger programs does speak volumes about the eagerness of a cruise line to show passengers their appreciation for their business. On my last Princess cruise I received free unlimited laundry and unlimited dry cleaning for the entire cruise, a free complete bar set-up and 150 Internet minutes per cabin. Now I happen not to drink and never even used any Internet minutes, but it still does mean something that a cruise line cares enough to offer these perks for those who do wish to use them.

Debra,
It does mean something that they are giving you something even though you may not use them and I am in the same boat as you so to speak. The last thing I want to do on a cruise is be on the internet and the laundry thing is not big deal.

I have said for years that a cruise line should model their past passenger programs after the land based casinos. I have frequented the casinos in Atlantic City for years and they know how to treat their best customers. It is not exactly the same thing but when you have spent thousands of dollars on a cruise line over 15 plus years as I have, there are ways to make people feel like they are special.

As I have said before, the past passenger program is only a small reason I would choose a cruise line but I was very disappointed with Celebrity's changes after all the hype. Someone could have been creative and thought up perks that are different and out of the box.

Don

Default LET'S SEE

Right now I'm on the verbal "cloud nine".. we booked the Equinox 10/18/10 cruise yesterday... It will be interesting to see what additional benefits they add this fall.. Since I am not a casino goer, and have not been on one line fifteen times (pretty close) Lets see what level I reach after this cruise...before taking this cruise I only have eight points

Maybe we should start a new thread on Rewards Programs? IMHO, theses programs are similar to the ones crdeit cards entice you with-you really don't get the full benefits if you spread the wealth around! A couple of years back I settld on ONE card (free groceries)and I'm reaping the benefits. I know variety is the spice of life and it's fun to try different cruise lines but if you find one that really suits you,as Celebrity does us, then if possible stick with it and the rewards mount up that much faster. That said, free laundry and internet is no big deal to me BUT the use of Micheals Club and free access to the T-pool (on Mercury) is!

I was on the same cruise as Parrot Mom, the Pacific Princess to the Amazon and have to agree. I won't be back, but I totally respect Princess pax who love and support their line.

As far as the rewards program, I believe =X= is in a different class altogether. I was fine with the rewards program before and took advantage of it all...and thrilled with what has just been itntroduced. For me and my DP, that's an extra huge savings. Here's what my DP and I will be saving on our upcoming September cruise:

Cocktails (2 drinks per pax for 14 nights) plus gratuity = $400
Free Dry Cleaning, press and Laundry for two = $60
90 minute Internet package (no purchase necessary) = $50
Complimentary Persian Garden on Port Days =$280

We'll be happy to take the $790 in savings.

I guess in short, if it comes down to it? I would rather have LESS rewards on a premium cruise line such as =X= than the same rewards or similar on a lower class line such as NCL, Princess or Carnival. IMHO.

For me, it is all about the service and =X= has it. Princess has some gorgeous ships, as do many other lines, but the stellar service speaks volumes for me ans surpasses any additional "freebie".

PRINCESS might be able to lure you with all these "perks", but it just "ain't" enough..

So, excited to see if the new Celebrity perks in the fall will affect me..for my fabulous cruise next October.. Here I am busy researching ports and side trips.. private and cruise.. and I haven't even gone on this years trans-atlantic cruise

Trtiton.. put up your invisible shield.. after saying you consider Princess "lower class",,, I'll have your back..

It's OK to agree to disagree, that's what makes this a community forum. It would be boring if we all agreed and didn't learn from each other. Each of us are passionate about our cruise line of preference too.

I don't mean to be disrespectful to other passengers who prefer other cruise lines, NCL, Carnival, Princess or RC. I just think X is in a seperate class. I think Crystal and Radisson are as well, and their passengers may consider X or HAL to be a "lower class line". That's OK For the past several years Conde Nast has rated Celebrity very high. That's all I'm saying...

I admit it, I love Celebrity! There...and I don't want a 12-step program for it!

This princess cruiser has too much class to sink to this level of debate.

Evryone has a right to their opinion. I am a Celebrity cruise but I loved the Liberty OTS. So now I have to split my cruises between Celebrity and Royal.

Hi Triton,

I agree that past passenger rewards are just one part of what makes a great cruise line. I think the "stellar service" thing on Celebrity is blown way out of proportion. I have sailed Celebrity many times along with Princess, HAL and many other cruise lines and the service has always been very good and was about equal on all cruise lines. Since the service is good on all cruise lines, for me, service just balances out. What is important to me is not what the latest ratings are on Conde Nast, but rather things like onboard ship maintenance, ship reliability, and the openness of a cruise line when there is a problem. Things such as those are the real way to separate a great cruise line from the also rans.

Given my experiences, I would rank Princess at the very top of the premium cruise lines, with Celebrity toward the bottom of the mainstream cruise lines like Costa and others. That said, maybe six or seven years ago, I would have agreed with you and put Celebrity at or near the top of the premium cruise lines, but that was then and IMHO things have changed. I am not "in love" with any particular cruise line and cruise whichever cruise line gives me the best bang for my buck and right now, IMHO Princess does have the upper hand.

It is as you said, great that we can all have different opinions without being nasty. If we all sailed what I feel is by far the best cruise line, the price of my next Princess cruise would probably go up by four of five fold. ()

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I have several friends who cruise 3 or 4 times a year. When we get together we allways discuss our cruises and they put Celebrity on top and Princess seems to have slipped considerably since Carnival purchased it.

It's rather discouraging when a passenger has an awful experience on your "favorite" cruise line, isn't it? Just as my adventure on Princess (an exotic nonetheless) was a complete bust and forever soured the "Love Boat"...I know others feel the same way regarding X or any other line.

Yes we all have our own opinion and experience which makes it completely our OWN experience. Nobody really has the right to take away that personal experience.

No, there is no need for a debate.

I'll continue to speak for myself and other customers, friends and family who absolutely love the X experience.

Incidentally...we are in the Celebrity forum aren't we? Or possibly some of you kind CruiseMates may wish to start another thread in Celebrity vs. (fill in the blank).

OK...back on track with the subject matter.

Hi Trackypup,

Your point is very well taken. Now that you mention I do remember the Infinity being one of the very few large cruise ships to actually fail to meet a minimum passing score for the CDC score.

Just over a year ago, before the Galaxy was sent to dry dock and most of the long time problems were finally repaired, the Conde Nast poll still rated it as the eighth best crusie ship afloat. This in spite of the fact that for many years before the Galaxy dry dock, the ship was anything but a premium cruise ship and in fact was in very poor condition. Just to mention a few things that needed repair, for many years, were stained bathroom fixtures and soft goods, fogged windows in the observation lounge, retractable pool cover that was stuck in place, wood around pool area that was broken and in desperate need of refinishing, etc.

Since we seem to be into using polls as a yardstick, other polls that can also be mentioned is the poll in Porthole cruising magazine, a year or two ago, that polled over than 100 categories for cruise ships and Celebrity received zero first place awards. Another poll, I believe in Australia, with over 10,000 responders, rated Celebrity as one of the five worst cruise lines. That said, I put no stock in those polls and even less, in any of the other polls.

For most experienced cruisers these polls are certainly not the final word, and actually have absolutely no meaning at all, but these polls are no doubt a good advertising technique, for all cruise lines, to try and lure newbie cruisers.

At the end of the day there is no right or wrong answer to what is the best cruise line for each of us. The key is for those who are truly interested in finding out what each cruise line is like is to do a lot of research and to try many different cruise lines and then decide for your self what is best for you.

I do agree with your last point that there is no right or wrong answer to what is the best cruise line for each of us.

I would however point out that you convienently forgot to mention that the M class ships have consistently been at the top of lists since they were introduced. If you are going to quote a couple of polls perhaps you should balance it out with the majority of the polls.

Fact is that the majority of people who are polled probably have no clue about Infinity's CDC score as it came out of drydock just as they don't know that five months before the above report she received a score of 100. Anyone who looks at the CDC scores would know that the 85 was a fluke considering Celebrity and Infinity's consistently high CDC scores.

Good Lord! Here we go again. No matter what the original topic is, it always ends up like this. If I started a thread on the price of pork bellies I'm sure it would evolve into Celebrity bashing. On the upside, I'm sure if I continue to sail Celebrity the chances of me running into this biased poster are slim and none! Absolutely my last post on this topic. Happy Cruising, Mates!

Actually it turned into a Princess and it's passengers bashing first rather than just enjoying the new benefits that Celebrity is offering. Princess passengers being snobs and god knows what else had no place in this thread.

Good night, can we please STOP? We're adults for God's sake.

I for one am really tired of the same old negative comments surfacing in most every Celebrity thread, especially when there is no relevance to the OP. Ditto for the smack-down on other lines which have no relevance to the OP. Please, for the love of cruising, just stop!

You know, in spite of my experience on Princess or Carnival...do NOT attack the Princess and Carnival fans on their board, at every opportunity or thread. If there are those who are unhappy with X, please do us a favor? Please find your appropriate forum and spread love, joy and peace there. Please?

Again, can we stay on track here?

Thanks Cruisers....

Amen!!!! Unfortunately, I'm sure that we will hear the old "everyone is entitled to their opinion" and the "I'm just trying to keep everyone informed" routine.
One would think that after all of these years, we would stop hearing the same recycled response over & over.

Default ANOTHER TWO CENTS

Several of the posters claimed this was a "Conde Naste" survey..SORRY it was done by Travel and Leisure.. What I also find interesting is that NOBODY, but NOBODY has mentioned in the TRAVEL AND LEISURE that Disney comes in fourth over Celebrity...and that just under Celebrity is Holland America and Cunard...It just seems this site was an opportunity for pro-Princess people to bash Celebrity... and I do wish they would find another forum or cruise site for this.. and TRITON.. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH..toss away the key..lol Won't even dare mention the latest issue of Conde Naste.. Why is it there isn't any anamosity on other boards when it comes to a discussion of Princess/Holland America or if you prefer NCL/Princess. or comparison of other lines.. only Princess/Celebrity or should we say Celebrity/Princess
