Default Have Celebrity Cruises lost their excellence & great foo

I'm going to sail Celebrity for the first time and I am reading some very negative reviews. I am 54 years old, female.
Have sailed Carnival before and was very pleased with food, excursions,
restaurant staff, room service, entertainment and shows.

Has Celebrity lately lost that excellence and charm Conde Nast Traveler

Magazine talks about? Is the food bad or just regular?

Have they slacked down on some things?

Thanks for your answwers!!!!

My last Celebrity cruise was on Solstice and we did not feel that Celebrity had lost their excellence. We were very pleased with all aspects of the cruise. The entertainment was great and the service was super.
We loved the way they haved layed out their buffet and I certainly enjoyed the food in the dinning room.

Celebrity may have slipped in a few areas but not enough for us to prefer another cruise line. We were on the Constellation last year and still felt like the extra effort in service was still there. The dining room service at our table was erratic but through no fault of the waiters-we were seated with a couple who allowed their 2 children to run the waiters ragged! But the food overall was very good, on occasion excellent.
We had problems a few years back on the Horizon with a noisy cabin but we were compensated quite generously on our next cruise, and on the Zenith we booked a "best available" outside and ended up under the anchor . It was a 14 nighter and they moved us the second week, which was pretty decent since you really take a chance booking "best available".
We are doing our 6th. Celebrity cruise this Nov.because we find the OVERALL experience for us far better than HAL,RCI or Princess. We have never sailed Carnival. Keep in mind that we are in our early 70's so that may have some bearing on our preference.
I don't put too much faith in polls-everyone has different likes and dislikes. I'm sure you will enjoy your cruise!

It is all relative I suppose. We had sailed with Celebrity 8 to 10 times back in the early 90's and it was always our favorite line compared against NCL, Carnival, Princess. However, we took an extended break from cruising for a number of years and just recently got back into it.

IMHO all cruise lines have dropped a few notches in terms of food and service, but we certainly noted that while Celebrity is still a great line, it is not the line we used to sail on.

Cruising is a very competitive and probably low margin business, so corners have to be cut somewhere to maintain low entry pricing.

A couple of examples of how service has changed might include the fact that back in the 90's every passenger on Celebrity was personally escorted to their cabins upon embarkation. The person escorting you offered to take your carry-on bags. Now, someone gives you verbal instructions on where to find your cabin upon entering the ship, and you and a thousand other lost souls wander around the ship, carry-ons in tow, looking for your cabin.

In the past if you liked to eat out on the back deck, there was always a line of staff waiting to carry your tray outside. This isn't just a service, it was also a safety issue as I have seen many a tray full of food go flying out of someone's hands as they walked through the sliding doors into to a blast of wind.

These types of issue in themselves do not make for a "bad" cruise in any way, but they are simply observations of how gradually things deteriorate. A slippery slope type of thing if you will.

So, have things changed? Yes, but not enough to put you off by any stretch.

Have fun!

I just received a call from 2 passengers just returning from a week on the Mercury and they had nothing but RAVE reviews about the service and food.
They said that they were treated extremely well and enjoyed the perks that booking into a suite (their first time) got them... I managed to get them a suite for only a couple of hundred $$ more and they told me that it is all my fault that they will never go back to a regular balcony... lol

I guess it is all perspective.

I'm SO glad to hear that! We're booked for Nov. on Mercury and I was starting to worry-after all, the ship is 12 years old added to a few negative comments. I'm going to ignore any adverse opinions and just enjoy the anticipation

Default CHANGE IN CELEBRITY

Here we go again We have cruised in the past few years three different Celebrity ships (Century, Galaxy and the Constellation).. This April we cruised the Pacific Princess (see the Pacific Princess Amazon review on this board)... and although the food in the main dining room was excellent Parrot Pop who never complains or notices anything said that he felt Princess was a step down from our Celebrity...IMO... Now.. in comparing the two ships.. we have found thelittle things on Celebrity added to the experience..the welcome...oh yes.. we have been guided to our cabin, the flowers, the CC level which is not available on Princess. When comng bck from an excursion there was always a cold drink,, a cold cloth, and a big welcome back..Not on Princess.. .The service is absolutely outstanding as is the sanitation..yes, we noticed the lack of it on the other line..Our last food experience on the Constellation seemed according to some p eople a step down, but there is not a new chef and a new menu..Oh yes..we have booked the Equinox for October 2010.. and you can consider us Celebrity people..

We have loved every Celebrity cruise we have been on. I have tried only: Princess, Carnival and Celebrity. Celebrity for us was in a league of it's own, much higher caliper of services than Princess or Carnival.

I also have enjoyed all the Celebrity cruises we have been on. I sailed twice on Carnival, but don't plan to do it again.
I did like the Liberty OTS and will also try the Oasis, but I will be booking another cruise on Celebrity soon.
