monetary exchange
Hello fellowcruisers,

Need some urgent advise please:

We are unable to exchange US$ here in Bermuda into Australia $ as the bank I went to is out of that currency(obviously it is not that called for according to the bank teller but someone needed the currency right?). Where is the best place to get Australian currency? What about at the JFK terminal (7 or 8) where our flight leaves at 7:00 p.m. or would I get a better deal at LAX (we only have 2 hours to catch our flight to Australia)? Could we use a credit card to exchange US$ into Australian dollars at a redi teller machine?

We heard that to get an exchange of currency on board the ship is not cheap and we would get a better deal off the ship but I will need Australian currency BEFORE we board.

Wouldn't we need AUST$ to pay for cab fare from the airport to our hotel in Sydney as well as food that we purchase while in Australia?

Thank you for any assistance you can give us.

There are always ATM's in the airports. If you use those currency exchange kiosks, like Travelex, in the airports, it's a rip off! The rates aren't good and they have fees on top of that. Personally, whenever we travel, alot of times we'll wait until we get to the airport at the country we're visiting, find an ATM, and then get some money out of our checking account into the local currency. Never had any problems and they usually provide a good exchange rate.

Hello Pete,

Thank you for your very helpful assistance.
Do you know where are the ATMs located at the Quantas terminal which we will be arriving at? If you do not, do any of the Cruisemates readers and/or staff know?

Unfortunately we've not been there - yet! So I can't help you with that one, but perhaps someone else on here can.

As I said, we've been to airports and train stations all over and never had a problem finding an ATM, so I'm sure there will be one somewhere in the airport.

In my experience, I just go to an ATM when I get to whatever country it is that we are visiting. Just seems like the easiest and best thing to do. That way I only take what I need and don't worry about exchanging anything back.
