Default Drink tips going from 15% to 18% Feb. 1

Just a heads up so no one is surprised onboard. Celebrity is raising the gratuities on all beverages from 15% to 18% as of Feb 1. This would also apply to beverage packages and upgrading from a classic to premium package.

Oceania has been 18 for a while I think...maybe even more now. But yep, you're right...they'll all follow.

It's no big deal.

The cost of living does go up as time goes by.

Well the prices of drinks on my last cruise had gone up about 25% to 30 % of what it had been in January 2013 and June 2012, so because the cost had gone up well the 15% gratuity was more. I feel they had hiked the prices too much for inflation Manuel. I believe they did this cost increase to cover their butts on the 123 go promotions they have.

For example a basic cappuccino, no liqueurs or flavorings was $5.50 plus a 15% tip in November. Even at over priced Starbucks you can get that for $3.

Now with the 123 go, people can choose an onboard credit, drink package, or basic tips to be covered. Well they have to make the money up somewhere for that promotion. I think the 18% is because many take the drinks package,so in order for those bartenders and barristas to get a gratuity, they have to hike up to those who do not get the promotional package.

After all we tip land based restaurants 20% right, which the cost of food is always going up but over the years we still tip 20%-it is just now that food costs more the waiter/waitress cut @ 20% is more too.

Now I feel it is is different when gratuities for the waiters and stewards go up on a cruise ship that is understandable as cost of living goes up- but things like tips based on the price of food/drink is different. The percentage may be the same, but you are still paying that waiter more. For example on a $10 meal 20 years ago we paid $2 but now that same meal that now costs $25 we pay $5 in tips to the server.

I can't disagree with anything Momofmeg said. Drink prices have gone up considerably in the last two - three years and I think the beverage packages have a lot to do with both the gratuity and drink price increases.

I'm not to knowledgeable on how the bar tips work but the raise is because someone isn't making as much money as they once did. If it's the bar staff then I have no problem. If it's the cruise line then they created their own problem and I'm not a fan of the solution.

Take care,
Mike

Going on my first celebrity cruise in a week and have the beverage package. Will I still be responsible for gratuities on beverages or are those included in the package? Thanks!

They are included in the package, you are not responsible.

Red face

I'm just sad that my next Celebrity cruise is not until April 2016.

The tips won't be a problem.

Have fun Manuel. I still have not booked any cruises. I was simply disgusted that my Celebrity cruise back in November felt more like I was on NCL. I am thinking if I want a quality experience now I am going to have to step it up to Azamara. In the meantime if I feel I want to cruise again and don't have the $$$$ for Azamara I will just book a NCL cruise. I may as well if Celebrity is no better and NCL is less in cost.

of course the thing is that I am afraid is NCL has gone downhill also since I noticed they are copying Celebrity's 123 go promotion. They call it something else, I forget what their catch phrase is but it showed me they consider Celebrity their competition. Sad isn't it?

Now if Celebrity would allow 3 people in a stateroom to have the spa/Blu dining at an extra cost (and no I am not talking about booking a suite, I want a spa room for 3 people since our daughter likes to go with us and cannot afford double rates for a room of her own) I may would try Celebrity again. I have found the pay extra restaurants on Celebrity have started to give you way too much food, but I want better quality food than the main dining room but portions no bigger than main dining room.

I have big hurdle to go through before this cruise. If my up-coming heart surgery goes well I will be cruising on the Allure of the Seas in February and on Celebrity Equinox in April.

If I am feeling well, I won't be too concerned with the price of drinks.

I will keep your surgery in my prayers. A good friend of my husband and I had that in January. He is doing well. The doctor okayed him to go back to work. Now he needs to decide if he will. He is retired and was only working 2 days a week.

That's good to know.

My first scheduled trip after my surgery will be from Daytona Fl. to Harford Ct. to attend a class re-union.

I do have two cruises on the books for next year.
