Default Change of plans

Due to the redeployment of the Equinox we have now changed to the Celebrity Reflection departing August 11th 2017 from Rome for 10 nights doing Italy & the Greek Islands....Is there anyone else doing this cruise?

A friend and I shared a cabin for an October 2012 cruise like yours (on the Celebrity Solstice). We decided early on that the shore excursions offered were too expensive and did our own. For example, in Salerno, near Naples, a bus trip along the Amalfi coast with lunch in Positano was $250 each. Instead, we took the tender to Salerno to purchase our own bus tickets directly.

However... on the tender ride, the couple beside us said they were going to take the ferry instead. Same route, but on the water, and all the way to Naples. We decided to do the same.

What a great decision! The ferry stopped in all the little towns along the coast, and then made a jog out the the Isle of Capri.

Capri! On impulse, we got off the ferry there and spent the day touring the island. Taking the chairlift to the top of the extinct volcano that formed the island, in the distance we could see the whole Bay of Naples, with Mount Vesuvius behind the city. The village of Anacapri was filled with unusual artisans' shops, and the trip through the mountainous ridge dividing the island was spectacular. The return ferry trip was direct to Salerno, where we returned to the ship in good time.

Total cost for each: 34 Euro for the ferry, 3 for the bus and 4 for a sandwich made before us by a local vendor. About $50, saving us $200 each.

The point of my story is that you can spend a lot of money on the ship's excellent packages (and I have taken several on other Celebrity cruises) or you can be adventurous. As long as you're back on the ship by the appointed hour -- a risk to consider seriously -- you might just find that your experience on distant shores is more rewarding than you expected.

By the way, you should know that Nice, Florence and Rome are inland, and you have to plan for transportation from the port to the city and back.

Hope this helps!
Andrew
