Default Mornin', Y'all, Part 2.....Cruise & Dive Photo

The Cruise 'n Dive photo for this week features the Caribbean Reef Octopus, Octopus briareus. Usually about 24 inches in length, these extremely intelligent creatures have large, specialized cells in their skin called chromatophores. These cells enable the octopus to make instant color changes, primarily for camouflage. Its beak, located at base of its arms, is used to bite its prey. It can also inject a toxin, which paralyzes the prey. These animals have rather sophisticated eyes and excellent vision. In this photo, just to the right of the left eye is the opening to the tube known as the siphon. An octopus forces water from its mantle through this highly-directable tube to gain thrust when swimming. Usually hidden in cracks and crevices during the day, they are often seen by reef divers after dark. I photographed this one at the Damas Rocks, on the Cay Sal Bank, Bahamas, on September 5, 2001.

Great shot, Tom! It's amazing that you actually got that close to one!
