I love to read magazines and mystery novels while cruising. You know, something that doesn't require any committment to study, such as work-related or current event -related stuff. Just pure entertainement. And if said mystery novel happens to involve a cruise ship, so much the better! Upcoming reads are (not necessarily all on the Let's Get Lei'd Cruise):
Murder on the Atlantic by Steve Allen
Separate Cabins by Janet Dailey
Decked by Carol Higgins Clark
Birds of Prey by J.A. Jance
The Case of Cabin 13 by Sam McCarver
And, of course (I've been saving it rather than reading along as the chapters came out), our own Patricia Hagan's Ocean of Dreams.
I'm partial to the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum mystery series as I grew up in Trenton where they take place and it's a hoot to remember the locations.
Angela Z.
I love Dorothy Sayer's detective novels and re-read most of her Peter Wimsey series once a year or so. That said, give me a good travel book any time, Paul Theroux or Jan Morris; I'm saving "Trieste", Morris' last book, for the 5/13 Summit cruise, but will probably also pack a couple of biographys as well.
I'm not one for mystery novels, but I do like adventure books that are shallow, entertaining, and nothing close to literary masterpieces. I've been known to read some of James Michener's books at sea (Caribbean, Hawaii, Alaska, etc), but that's not the norm for me. Usually, I tend toward Michael Crichton, Clive Cussler, etc.
Right now I'm reading the newest John Grisham book, so far very good. Would definately bring one of his books on a cruise and also any Danielle Steele book, have her newest one too :-)
I'm with you Divetex. I like to read Clive Cussler and Jack Higgins while on a cruise. Almost forgot, John Grisham is good too. Won't be long when this happens on Summit.
I'm with Donna. Grisham is already in my bag (The Summons). I just finished "Skipping Christmas"... a cruise classic. Cussler is also a non-stop adventure. I get tired reading those.
Book of the year: RiverGod Wilbur Smith Ancient Egypt backdrop of twists
Runner up: The Eight Katherine Neville Everything relates to Chess!
Re: Re: What do you like to read while on a cruise?
Excellent, funny, easy read. Life can just be so funny sometimes.
Premise: Daughter is gone for Christmas. The parents decide to skip Christmas and go on a cruise instead. Sounds great... alas Murphy raises his ugly head... how does it turn out? You'll have to see.
Leave for my cruise tomorrow. Will start the Summons on the plane. Can't wait!
Re: Re: Re: What do you like to read while on a cruise?
I've already put Decked (Carol Higgins Clark) and Beyond Eden (Catherine Coulter) aside to take on our April 7/Grand cruise, but will definitely look into some of the ones y'all mentioned. Can always count on Nora Roberts. Last cruise read The Mulvaneys, an Oprah Book, author???, and it was too heavy ---not cruise material, but made myself stick with it.
Re: Re: What do you like to read while on a cruise?
I'm so busy on a cruise I don't take time to slow down and read much,,,,,but do take along John Grissom's or Daniell Steel's latest stuff,,,,,just in case I have some spare time. Guess I need to slow down and smell the roses eh? !!! Jo
