Today is my mom's 89th birthday. (I was born when she was 62, of course ...)
She enjoys reasonably good health for someone of her years, her mind is as sharp as it ever was (think razor) and even if her step has slowed, her zest for life hasn't.
One of her birthday presents is moving into the "assisted living" area of her senior residence. She's been in the nursing care area since she broke her leg a couple of days before Christmas. I think some old ladies would just have given it up at that point. Not Miracle Mom.
I happened to be lurking in one day when she doing her daily walk therapy. The PT said, "That's enough for today."
"No," said Mom. "Once more around."
Gotta love that old girl.
And, as my dad always said on her birthday:
"Hooray, Hooray, it's the first of May.
Outdoor ****ing starts today !!!"
That was quickly followed by mom's rejoinder .. understand her name is Irma Mae ...
"Irma May, then again, Irma may not."
I hasten to add that I didn't learn about those little exchanges until I was about 30.
She is a grand lady with such an essential sweetness about her ... I am very proud to call her "Mom" and very blessed that she's still around so I can.
I so wanted to take her to Hawaii with us ... she said not. But I can take her somewhere when she turns 90, she says.
She will be getting Lei'd on Mothers Day. Queeg and I are going to order a lei sent to her from Hawaii. That should be tres cool !!!
Happy Birthday to your Mom! 89 is quite a high number, it was great meeting her at the pfrolic last summer.
Actually my Mom's 80th birthday is on May 8th. We're taking her out for dinner this Sat as the folks leave early next week for a convention and visit with friends back in Nova Scotia, and I'll miss her on both her birthday and Mothers Day. They still love to travel
and are both doing well for being in their 80's.
I always liked it when I was younger as a lot of times her birthday would be ON Mothers Day and I could get away with one card/present
What a great milestone!! Please tell her Kuki says Irm Mae ENJOY!!!
She'd love this fellow who entertains in my bar every Friday during lunch. This Friday we're having a big BASH in the bar to celebrate his 80th birthday. Guess that makes him just a tad young for Irma Mae.
He told me today that he just went to the Dr. to have his sex drive lowered. He wants it out out of his head, and down where it belongs.
Irma May, happy 89th birthday! I am so happy that you are well enough to move back into the assisted living section of your residence. Thank you for giving us the gift of Pamda. I wish you many more happy birthdays!
