Default Interesting Tahiti News...from the SeaTrade Insider

There was no mention of the deal Princess has done with the government of French Polynesia to take over the former Renaissance ships R3 and R4 and to operate one of them year-round in Tahiti. Seatrade Insider, which broke this story on April 5, understands an announcement about Princess start-up in Tahiti and its plans for the second R vessel is imminent.

Meantime, despite Micky Arison’s revelation that Wind Song’s Tahiti comeback is ‘not performing very well (see June 21 news item below), new cruise products are in the pipe-line. Bora Bora Cruises will take delivery of Tia Moana and Tu Moana later this year (Seatrade Insider 21/02/02) and Aggressor Fleet’s live-aboard Tahiti Aggressor, a 106-foot 16 passenger handicapped-diver accessible catamaran, enters service in September.

Aranui 111, a newbuild to replace the existing cargo/passenger vessel that operates under the French flag between Papeete and the Marquesas Islands, will also commence service later this year. Compagnie Polynesienne de Transport Maritime’s Papeete-based Romina Wong told Seatrade Insider at yesterday’s workshop the 3,800-ton 200 passenger vessel, which is under construction at the Severnav shipyard in Romania and was due for delivery mid-year, is now expected to arrive in September.

Not quite 70,000 tons:

Ordered by Bora Bora Cruises of Tahiti, the 69 metre 'boutique' cruise ships will be of monohull design, demonstrating Austal's flexibility in design and customisation.

"Tu Moana" and "Tia Moana" (meaning 'strong on the ocean' and 'sure and stable on the ocean') will accommodate 78 passengers each in 37 cabins and will provide luxury cruises between the islands of Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa and Bora Bora at a comfortable cruising speed of 14 knots. Due for delivery in early 2003, the cruise ships will feature a luxurious interior outfit to a four star hotel standard in passenger areas and will be fitted to a high commercial standard for other areas. The vessels will boast a variety of onboard facilities including a combination of double and twin share cabins, lounge and restaurant areas, a pool/spa and an array of water sports equipment. The vessels will operate with a crew of 37.

The Prince deal is done according to Tahiti. My question is why is it going to take them till Sept 2003 to start. The ships must be in bad shape or they really want to redo them. Either way, the cruising community is a winner!
