POLL.. the MOST INTERESTING person you've met on a cruise?
When cruising you can't help but meet some wonderful people. It's a natural, when cruising, you're going to make at least a couple of future life long friends.
SO... who's the most interesting person you've met on a ship?
- no qualification as to being a celebrity, or royalty or such.
For me.. there are two who stick out
Ray and Helen(RBoudreux).. who we've cruised with twice now....MY IDOLS!
Great couple, fortunate to be blessed with good health, and a ZEST for travel that's unparalled. A combination we all dream of!!
The Thai Royal Family- met them on the Seabourn Sun... spent a number of hours during the cruise , in the casino, playing BlackJack and talking with the Prince and Princess. Fascinating.
Re: POLL.. the MOST INTERESTING person you've met on a cruis
I am presuming that you, Kuki, do not qualify because it's your question?
I agree. Ray and Helen are right up there. They are living MY dream.
I guess it's Erin -- "Island Dog" and her humans, Bunny and Theresa. They truly touched my life.
I suppose I should mention CruiseAholic. He's certainly interesting.
Red and Franny Shannon. He is Master of Sea Cloud and she's his wife. I don't think I've ever met a man who loves the sea more and his love of young people is just as great.
The wonderful, newly-widowed lady from Australia on Marco Polo. Her husband wrote "Breaker Morant" and we talked books endlessly. Not even a broken arm, suffered during a nasty crossing of the Tasmin sea, could keep her down.
Tom Clancy's best friend, Darrell. We talked a lot about covert activities as we sailed the South China Sea.
Re: POLL.. the MOST INTERESTING person you've met on a cruis
Thanks Kuki and Pamda.----Flattery will get you no where----Well maybe a little. It makes Helen and I feel so good to have friends who think of us that way. We try to be kind and gentle to everyone. Health is a very important factor in our lives. But most of all the love that we have for each other has taken us over smooth paths and some rough ones also. Thanks again.
Re: POLL.. the MOST INTERESTING person you've met on a cruis
THE most fascinating was Robert K. Massie, author of Peter the Great and Nicholas and Alexandra among other works. He was guest lecturer and part-time tour guide on our first cruise to St. Petersburg in 1992, just after "liberation". His knowledge and stories added immensely to our cruise.
A fascinating couple with whom we have cruised many time is Eric and Jean Cass, who have sailed over 1000 days on Seabourn alone and who have sailed with just about any cruise line past and/or present; Eric is especially knowledgeable about the seas and cruising and is very entertaining as well. We always look forward to seeing them on board.
Re: POLL.. the MOST INTERESTING person you've met on a cruis
I can think of a couple of people that we have met and cruised with on a cruise.
John Maxtone Graham--Author of many Historical Ships. We sailed with him on the Sky Princess for 28 days. He lectured practically every day showing slides of many older ships. He was very interesting.
Peter Alden--Author of many books about wild life especially birds. Cruised with him on the Pearl in the Indonesian waters. He is very knowlegeable with birds and a very interesting person to be with.
There are many more, however, the above two mentioned stand out with me.
Re: POLL.. the MOST INTERESTING person you've met on a cruis
Gee, whiz.....how come CC and I never meet anyone interesting on ships?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahaha!!!!!!
Just about everyone we've EVER met on a ship has been.....well,..... interesting! Ray and Helen? Interesting. Kuki? Interesting. Pamda and Queeg? Interesting. So many others, too. SeaFan and Timberhead, the Merfolk, CA, the "Lincoln Ladies," Jake and Heather, April, Lisa, DougH, and the list goes on and on.....all interesting - and nice - folks.
Re: POLL.. the MOST INTERESTING person you've met on a cruis
Interesting reading and it is certainly hard to single out as there have been many special and interesting individuals! Ray and Helen rank right up there because a lot of people that whine and are negative could take lessons from the positive and wonderful
outlook they have!
A woman I sailed with on my Alaska cruise, she was very close to 90 and every day she was dressed absolutely perfect, was so sociable and nice to everyone, she was the darling of the cruise. She lived in Beverly Hills and I could have sworn she was an actress in another life! Her daughter wrote me a note when she passed away and thanked me for always sending her mom post cards and holiday cards. She was just a very classy lady.
There was a Cuban couple who fled in the 60s and they were very interesting, world travelers and both taught at universities. I thoroughly enjoyed sitting with them at dinner and learning about their culture before Castro. Our ships passed on a Panama Canal cruise and we were up on deck waving at each other. The bridge helped me figure out when we would pass and they had done the same thing, it was pretty cool.
Pamda, I like John Maxtone-Graham, too! I won't go into why, long story, but he did call me on the phone one time to ask my opinion about something! :-)
Getting too long, too many interesting people! Sue
Re: POLL.. the MOST INTERESTING person you've met on a cruis
Helen and Ray come to my mind as well. That Model T "put out the fire story" was too much! May their health and good fortune continue for many more years!
And the list of interesting people that I have met and created friendships with...well, it's still growing!!
Re: POLL.. the MOST INTERESTING person you've met on a cruis
Pamda--I believe Bobbie Massie was still alive when his father traveled with us on the (much missed) Royal Viking Sun. Robert's research into the lives of the last Romanovs was piqued by Alexi's hemophilia--or so he told us; he was very moved by the plight of Alexi and of course of his own son.
Re: POLL.. the MOST INTERESTING person you've met on a cruis
Well honestly the most interesting person I ever met on a cruise was ....My Husband!!
I met my husband three years ago while sailing on the Carnival Sensation with my best friend. We met sailing in Cozumel and fell in love and two day. We had a lon distance realtionship relationship for about a year and then I moved 4 states to be with him. We just celebrated our one year wedding anniversary. I love telling people how we met.
The oddest person I ever met on a cruise was from the same cruise. His name was Donald. He was one of my tablemates. He had worked for a carnival and had been struck by lightening. Every night at dinner we heard how he couldn't smell or taste the food, but let me tell you there wasn't a morsel left on his plate!! My girlfriend and I still talk about him.
Re: Re: POLL.. the MOST INTERESTING person you've met on a c
We once shared a a table with 4 customs agents, 2 females and 2 males around 30 yrs. old. Talk about interesting stories! Wow, they had a bunch. Sounded like we were talking to Miami Vice writers only some of the stuff took place in South America! One of them told us if we ever got to Oahu to snorkel Hanuama Bay. Back then (maybe 22 years ago?) it was not as crowded as it is today. It was about l0 or l2 years later until we ever got there ourselves, but it was one heck of a snorkeling place. Guess it still is. So, my thanks to them for their many stories and snorkeling tip! Different strokes for different folks, but this is one of the reasons I'll take the formal dining room seating over the dine around style any time. You just never know the stuff you'll learn from the people you meet!
