You can watch the locks of the Kiel Canal (looks out of the canal to the Elbe river). I live 5 minutes away by car or about 20 minutes by bike from there. We love to ride our bikes there, have an ice cream and watch the ships, sail boats and whatever else might want to pass through.
You can also see how lousy our weather is.
There is another site that has three web cams but unfortunately the site is down. It should be back up by next week again.
Suzanne, who saw the Maxim Gorki pass through just a bit ago. Was stuck on the ferry while waiting for her to pass.
We went through the Kiel Canal in July 2000 ( I think it was the 4th actually) on the NCL Dream and were surprised to see how many people were watching us from the shore. It was definitely a highlight of the cruise.
NCL Dream is a very big deal here! They start announcing the arrival a day before hand. Since the arrival is usually right around 1:30pm, people line the canal to have picnics, etc., and watch her pass by. The NCL Dream is the largest cruise ship that can pass through the locks and under the bridges.
