Default Dawn Princess Hawaii--Tahiti--5 sea days not what we signed

We are going on the Dawn on Oct. 2 and have been advised that Christmas Island's pier is so damaged that we will be forgoing the port--5 sea days between Hawaii and Tahiti and Princess has not indicated what they will do to sweeten the pot.....

Anyone else going on this cruise or experienced this?

The contract for the cruise is the passenger ticket. Princess passenger ticket, item 8. "RIGHT TO DEVIATE FROM ROUTE AND CHANGE OR OMIT PORTS OF CALL. Carrier may, for any reason, without notice or liability for payment or compensationa) deviate from the scheduled ports of call, route and timetable,(b) proceed without pilots, tow or be towed and assist vessel, (c) reender assistance to preserve life and property. Accordingly, You should not make any important arrangements or meetings based on the proposed itinerary of the cruise, which may change without liability to Carrier."

Item 7 Covers RIGHT TO CANCEL, CHANGE TIME OF SAILING OR PORT, SHORTEN CRUISE, SUBSTITUTION.

Looking at a 2002 Princess brochure you are admonished to read the passenger ticket. In the copy I am reaing there is no reference in the vey tiny print entitled "General; Information" to the above itemsi
We have cruised more with Princess than any other cruise line and only twice were we affected by cruise changes. The first was when the Island Princess, while off the coast of Mexico went out of it's way to remove an injured seaman from a coal barge at sea. This caused us to miss a port of call. Then several years later there was a Hurricane off the Coast of Mexico that damaged the next port of call, Matazalan so badly the ship by-passed it.

In neither incident I do not recall receiving anything from Princess except apology from the Captain. I am not a lawyer and cannot give you legal advice. You may be lucky if you get a small refund or ship board credit if enough passengers make a "stink". You may have some bargainig chips if you never have received the passenger ticket which represents your contract for the voyage.

How long is Princess going to talk about that damaged pier? I was to Christmas Island in Spring of 99 and then all of 2001 I kept reading about that damaged pier. As I remember it was not a little wooden pier where the tender came in. I just know they have been saying that a long time. I did not like the way Princess presented that port at all. They really down played it and were almost rude about it in their videos on the TV. If they don't want to go there, they should just say they decided to discontinue the stop instead of using the pier as an excuse. Sue

I agree that the pier has been used an excuse for a long time, but is it not the responsibility of the government of Christmas Island to build, maintain and repair the pier? Just wondering out loud.

Couldn't they substitute Fanning Island in Kiribati as an alternate? I am sure they would love the extra ship passing trhough.

The first time I went to Jamaica on CCL we could not dock because of bad weather and just had one more day at sea. the only thing they did was give the port charges back.

But the government authorities in Christmas Island do say-"Out Loud", that the pier is maintained and useable, that other cruise lines have already called in this year and that two more are scheduled to arrive, one on 25th September and one on 13th December. Even if this were not the case,do you not think that Princess could afford to assist in any pier maintenance if they ever seriously intended to maintain the itinerary, remember that the Republic of Kiribati is one of the poorest countries in the world.
Perhaps there is some other reason for the "cancellation", or maybe they are re-assessing the serviceability of the pier even now. Let us hope that for the sake of the Dawn Princess passengers, and the Islanders, that Princess may have a change of heart
