Default ghost bookings

Does anyone know anything about "ghost bookings" for cruise ships. I"m not talking Halloween. We thought we had heard something about booking well in advance, with a cruiseline - but not specifying the exact date and ship - just the general area that you wish to visit. We want to book something for around May 2006, probably to the Southern Caribbean - but I can't find anything booking that far in advance.

If you've heard of this term - and can give me any details, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks very much

I know Princess has something where you can do a booking for a cruise up to 4 years away by putting a deposit down, without saying what ship or itinerary etc. You have within the 4 years to decide. Sorry I can't remember what they call it.

Princess will offer you usually a great "credit" to put down a deposit on a future cruise <within 4 years> while on a cruise. You do not have to pick any time or ship. The deposit isn't as large either. Is this what you mean?

Yes, I think you're on the right track. I was of the understanding that they ARE booked during the cruise. I've seen several references to other cruiselines having these "ghost" booking -but not sure if Carnival does it or not.
Thanks for your responses.
