Default POLL- Your #1 TIP to a new cruiser?

I know we have a veritable encyclopedia of cruise information buried in the minds of our fellow cruisemates.
BESIDES... just go and have a good time! What would your #1 tip be to someone heading out on their first cruise??

#1 from me.. brightly colored tape, material or objects on all luggage! Wild enough to differenetiate your bags from 1000s of others.
(though we have an advantage having the UGLIEST set of luggage as well, so no one would ever consider having the same stuff)

Regards,
Kuki

Take warmer clothes than you think you will need.

Hmmm. Maybe I will write a book about this ???

Oh, darn. I already did. Watch for "Happy Sails" in March or so. In the meantime, there's always Cruise Control.

Hi: mmmm.....(thinking....) mmmmm...mmmmm Oh yes! Bring a couple of those walkie Talkie things...especially if you have kids...but shut them off in the dinning rooms. They are great for locating wandering kids or hypnotized shopping spouses. Bob

My #! tip is to be flexible, go with the flow. Sometimes things don't go exactly as planned, but that doesn't mean you have to stress out about it. My #2 tip is don't try to do everything there is to do on the ship....remember it is a vacation...relax a little.

Besides packing a good attitude, my tip would be to research your port stops, BEFORE your cruise.

1)Get a passport.
2) Read. Read everything. Read about the cruise choices, cruise lines and ships. Read about accomadations and travel choices. Read about ports, excursions and activities. Read about hotels, dress "codes", and tipping. Read your arrangements before you sign and be sure you understand what is included (and be sure if you think it is included that you have something in writing that says so), read about travel insurance and choices, READ YOUR DOCUMENTS WHEN THEY ARRIVE , make sure they are accurate and reflect everything you paid for. Make sure names on tickets agree to your identification.. Read your airlines luggage restrictions and your expected arrival times.Read about your responsibilities to confirm flight arrangements. Read your shipboard newsltter like it was the bible (because it is). And when you think you are done reading ,read tips and suggestions like this.
3) GET A PASSPORT
4) Don't stop reading.
5) ask questions.
6) Get a passport
Oh yes , did I say READ and Get a passport?
Then , relax, you are on vacation.

Whatever happens - DO NOT LET OTHER PASSENGERS RUIN YOUR VACATION!!!

There will be some times that you just shake you head and say "can you believe they did/said that?" - then let it go. Take everything with a grain of salt and enjoy your well deserved vacation.

Jodi

For those who are prone to sea sickness - EAT if you start to feel sick. Crackers, bread, anything to fill the void in the tummy. Sounds crazy, but it really does work!

Mine is the same as Bill's,
Definitely get a passport! I find it easier to make a packing list and keep to it, try not to add too much to it, don't forget the sunscreen if you are going in warmer climate and what I've been doing to avoid getting that first sunburn is going to the tanning spa a few weeks prior to cruising, just once or twice a week, max. time 20mintes. I now never get that sunburn that can really bother you the rest of the cruise.

If you need to budget, don't forget to budget for photographs taken by the ship's photographer and while you're at it, budget for your photo processing when you return with all that film you shot.

Don't expect everything to be perfect, because it NEVER is, even on the best of cruises.

1: Read your cruise documents carefully, make sure everything is in order and this is very important, fill out all your paperwork before you leave home!

2. Don't sweat the small stuff - learn to roll with the punches.

3. Go with a positive attitude, that you will have a good time.

4. Don't try to do too much - budget your time as wisely as your money.

5. Get a passport (does this sound like a broken record?)

6. Get travel insurance....you never know what will happen.

I travel often. The one thing that has got me. Is Air tickets. Be sure to check them. If you are given "E" tickets some air lines don't honor them going out of country. Go over your Air tickets with travel agent ask any question you arn't clear on. A bad way to start a cruise is to be standing on dock when ship is on its way. They WILL NOT come back and get you.

Take your enthusiasm with you!!
A week (more or less) at sea is the vacation of a lifetime - completely awesome!
when a staff member on board asks how you are doing, tell them, "Fantastic!" and mean it. you have waited a long time for this vacation - make the most of it!

Here's one I heard a long time ago and used it on our last cruise. Take an empty carry on bag that you can fold and put in your main luggage on the way to the cruise. Use this bag for stuffing the souveniers you buy during the cruise. That way you can carry one bag home with maybe a strap instead of lots of paper bags etc. Bob

Hmmm, many good suggestions here but mine main thing, is RELAX, it is a vacation.

So you have to stand in line to get onboard, big deal! Have you ever tried to get 1,000 people through your front door, all at once??

Forget the worries, other people bugging you by what they do! Take it from someone who gets stopped 9 times out of 10 in the airport these days for the extra security check! Since May with 6 flights, I've taken my shoes off 5 times and one time socks, too!!!

Once I lock my front door, I'm on vacation and an extra wait, a line taking a long time is really not a problem, soon I'll be on the ship and happy as can be!

This year I will take less clothes than I did before. Definitely glad we got passports last year, even though we didn't need them yet. I'll take paperbacks instead of hardbacks to lighten the weight load. I even used the EOS library last year. We definitely did a lot of relaxing. Uninterrupted reading time is a great luxury for me. I'm looking forward to more quiet afternoons in the solarium.
We took our own pics in the dining room and they were every bit as good ,if not better, than the professional ones and a lot cheaper. Our wonderful dinner companions took turns with us taking "couple" photos and our waiter took a group pic with all of our cameras. The photo booth lost money on us. Having companions or even total strangers (our cruisemates were truly friendly) take your picture instead of the pros is a better idea. ie, I'll take yours, you take ours.
We didn't use much cash or even traveler's checks because of the Sea Pass. $20 traveler's check in the casino was about it. Not big spenders anyway. I don't wear much jewelry, which seemed to be the focus of most shoppers.
Bottom line--relax and have fun.

I agree with every response given. I would only add that if you have an issue with something during your cruise, take positive action to have it corrected. Notify someone in authority and give them a chance to solve it for you. They can't fix something when they don't know it's broken. *****in' to your fellow passengers will not solve anything; besides I don't want to hear it. Once you take positive action, then put it aside. If you don't like the outcome, then contact your cruise agent or cruise line after your return. You might be surprised to find that after your return, the issue wasn't as big a deal as when you were emotionally involved with it on the cruise.

I refuse not to enjoy my cruise. When I do have an issue that causes me grief, I voice my concerns in writing to the proper authority and then put it aside. I remind myself that I invested too much money and time not to enjoy my trip.

Thanks for all the useful tips,

Wes

I will add to Air Tickets and land vouchers. When in PORT don't be late getting back to ship. When they say ship leaves at 4:30 it dose and getting to next port on your own is a bummer

Put a day by day itinerary in each piece of luggage. Lay it on top where it can be seen if it gets lost.

Make copy's of your passport and credit cards and inform the credit card companies that your going out of the country.

Cross pack. Some of his and some of hers in each bag.

Clear plastic make up kits found at Wall Mart for meds and small items. You will clear the airline inspection easier.

Pack underwear in plastic 2 gallon ziplocks so it doesn't fall on the ground during inspection.

Pack your swimsuit in your carryon if it's important to get out on deck before your suitcases arrive.

Agree with beachmom: Crosspack everything. You will always have something to wear.
