Default Do you have a saying from your parents when you were kids?

The saying my mom always said was when I asked for something unreasonable, she would say....wish in one hand and spit in the other and see what you get first!
hahahahah
It use to make me mad!

When I was getting ready to go out on a date or out with my friends, my dad used to say, "Behave yourself! Have fun!" I used to go out the door mumbling under my breath, "I wish he'd make up his mind."

If I was getting to big for my britches, she would sing:

"I like me I think I'm grand!
I go to the movies and I hold my hand!"

I hated that! Luckily I've forgotten the second verse. Phew!

"....what in Sam Hill is going on here?"
We always wondered who Sam Hill was.
Also, "this, too, shall pass" . She was right.....it usually did.

Along with Angela, my parents also said, "This too shall pass."

Also, an old German saying, roughly translated to, "By the time the soup is served, it won't be as hot as it was on the stove."

My mother in-law used to always tell my hubby...."I can't wait until you have kids of your own...and I hope they are just as bad as you!"

Dad's very good advice was this. "You may not always know what you are doing, but, you can always look like you do". His advice to dress appropriately at all times and always look your best (giving a good first impression) works for me.

Dad never sugar coated his words….
“If wishes were horses, we’d all be knee high in horse sh__”.

Mom was a little more selective in wording…..
“It’s natural to wish, though arrogant to expect wishes”.

I heard most of the above sayings when I was a kid. I have told my kids many times, "This too shall pass."
We still laugh about the time Dad got tired of bugging us to turn out the lights when we left a room. One night he went through the house turning off the lights singing, (To the tune of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again") "The lights are on, the lights are on Hurrah, Hurrah ! Everybody's gone but the lights are on Hurrah, Hurrah!

Then there is Mom's old favorite, "Stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about!"
IVarious friends have sent me an e-mail joke with the whole list. I'll have to see if I can find it and add some more.

My mom would always say "When my ship comes in" so as a young child I would be expecting to wake up and there would be a big ship outside my door.

Growing up where I did, some expressions could be quite scattological. In my neighborhood, if a child would ask for something expensive, a common parental response would be: "What should I do, eat paper and **** money?" I was concerned about one of my sisters years later when her 5-yo asked for ice cream money. She told him she didn't have any money. His next question: "Can't you eat some paper?"

My parents always used to say "Do as I say and not as I do!" Also, one my Mom loved was "Eat everything on your plate - think of all those starving kids in China!"

Mine, as a parent, when the kids were asking for something I couldn't do at the time, was "Later."

The kids' response was, "Well, AFTER later, can we ..."

This is one I use with my kids. If they say they "want" something, I always start singing the old song "You don't always get what you want........." . They really hate that! Of course it could be the singing that they object to! I don't know who recorded the song, just that it was in "The Big Chill" back in the 80's in the funeral scene.

My dad used to say "Great Ceasar's Ghost!" as an excamation when I was a kid. He still does sometimes....
