Default POLL- What U NEED TO KNOW before

Help me out here! If you're advising someone who is considering booking their first cruise.. what are you most important and helpful pieces of advice? What do they NEED to KNOW about cruising before they even book?

I'll then see if I can compile the list into an article for CruiseMates. Advice from the experienced!

1.Cruise demographics should be added. There are some cruise lines better suited for seniors than young or single people.

2.Which cruise ship have single cabins, or low single supplements.

3. Activities aboard the ship( who wants to be on a long cruise with nothing to do)

4. The best season or time to cruise, (If you don't want to be around a lot of college kids stay away from spring break).

5. Dinning options (formals turn some people off)

1) they need to find a good TA.
2) they need to communicate to that TA who they are. likes/ dislikes,formal/ casual,
rock climbing walls/libraries, active/quiet, single/ married, family/couple/single . The GOOD TA will get all that out of them and be able to put them on the right cruise, ship, cruise line and itinerary.
3) need to do research. talk to cruisers. read message boards. read articles about cruising. Decide things like Inside /outside/balconey /suite.
4)research destinations. Tahiti, Alaska, Bermuda , Europe, round the world, Carribbean
Panama Canal, Pacific Rim, Eastern carib, Western Carib, southern Carib, "ultimate carib" south America, Antarctica etc etc etc.
5) small ship, large ship, . low end, high end.
6) precruise, post cruise,
7) own air/ cruise line's air.
8) freestyle cruising, personal choice cruising, standard dining, . First seating ,late seating, open seating.
9) passport or other ID
10) travelling with kids? childrens programs, excursions for kids, documentaion if both parents are not travelling.
11) special needs. Handicapped, food
12) general age groups . What yoiu will encounter on QE2 vs. Carnival Facination
13) affordability/budget
14) personal expectations vs realities.
Final things, how do I get an upgrade , can I bring soda and liquor onboard, can I wear shorts in the dining room, is there an iron in the room,do they provide towels for the beach, what do I do with my money and ID when I'm at the beach , which island has the best shopping and which excursion would you book to Sting Ray City (Capt Marvin or Capt Bryan)and do I really have to wear a tie on formal night?
How the heck did I ever book my first cruise? We decided on Friday night to go on a cruise. Found an ad for Princess and figured "what the heck", Captain Steubing and Gopher ,how can we go wrong? Booked the cruise on Sunday and then found out where the Western caribbean was. Maybe that was a better way.

My" real "four rules of travel. Get a good TA, Get a passport, travel at least one day in advance and buy travel insurance.

1-First , find a grreat travel agent in their area. Someone who is not rushed, who can discuss the types of options out there.
2-With this info in hand, check out the CRUISE MATES boards and ask questions , search for info.
3-Then decide Time of year, Budget, Location, Length of cruise, Transportation..

#1: A cruise is NOT ALL-INCLUSIVE, no matter what anyone tells you!

Maybe it sounds silly, but I'd tell them to keep foremost in their minds that the taking of a cruise is designed to be fun. Lots of fun. And it can be. And it almost certainly will be. . .

if. . .

you don't spend all your time obsessing about the small stuff (irons, smuggling liquor onboard, power of the hair dryers, whether Tuesday or Wednesday will be the formal night, and whether room 9024 is better than room 9026).

I've often gotten the feeling reading these boards that some people lose track of the forest for the trees, and I'd warn newbies against that from the start.

We too were blessed in that we started cruising back in the 70's, long before there were so many things to worry about (or maybe we just didn't know enough to worry--also a wonderful thing). We just booked, cruised, discovered things as we went along, and had a great time. We still tend to do it that way.

The fact is, if you're not a seasoned traveler, you can hardly go wrong on a cruise. As long as you can haul yourself and a passport on an airplane with a suitcase full of clothes, you have done pretty much all you need to do to have a nice time. You'll be met at the destination airport, schlepped to the ship, taken to your room, pointed in the right direction at each and every stop, and overall be given fewer chances to screw things up than with almost any other form of travel.

So don't sweat the small stuff and just enjoy yourselves.

Kuki,
Cabin location if they may be prone to motion sickness. That could ruin a vacation.

I need to add one thing. They (we) need to know tipping is not rocket science. The guide lines are written. Tips are a gratuity not a requirement. If you have good service follow or exceed it, if not let it show in your tip or just keep your money.

I'd like to add something too.

You cannot cruise for the price that is advertised in the paper, on the net, or in the brochures. There are things called port charges (or now, non-commisionable fees), government taxes and fees.

Thomas

Kuki:

Continuing on, I would like to "cite" the "sight" I saw on this "site." There are many among us who confuse these terms. The first refers to citation. Usually used just by the lawyers among us. The second refers to vision. The last, refers to a physical location such as a building site or a web site. Sorry for the lesson; just a pet peeve.

thanks,

Families with kids should look at different lines for different reasons then say people going on a romantic celebration. Also first tiem cruisers might like a newer ship vs an older ship... Definitely what someone else posted about you never pay the amopunt listed and it is not all inclusive.

And shouldn't we eat in the eating room or pee in the peeing room instead of showering in the bathroom?

I never dine (or eat) in the dinning room. It's too noisy.
