O.K. so I'm sitting at the desk at the hotel room reading Cruisemates message boards and open the drawer to get out a pad and pen and I find an envelope with a $20 and $10 bill in it. What do I do with it?
First, I'm not going to pocket it because it doesn't belong to me. I've never taken anything that didn't belong to me in my life and I'm not going to now. I wouldn't be able to sleep and would feel terribly guilty.
Second, if I give it to the hotel staff they're just going to pocket it anyway and won't make any effort to find the rightful owner.
Third, the rightful owner could have been the last guest in this room or maybe the 4th, or 9th, etc. guest in this room. Who would know?
I think I'll just leave it here and forget about it. What do you think?
Thomas (and no, I'm not going to send it to any of you either)
I was going to suggest that you send to me, oh well :-)
Its anyone's guess as to who left it, unless I'd hear that someone did leave it, I'd leave the maid a nice tip and keep the rest??? You know who ever else gets that room will certainly take it....don't U think? Do, let us know what you do.....
I'd ask the front desk to check and see who the maid was that took care of the room prior to your checking in. I'd ask if she was still on duty, or will be during your stay and hand it to her - explaining it was left in the desk. Sounds like it might have been her tip?
Just MHO.... bet he or she would really be appreciative that you went out of your way to make sure they got it.
If you leave it where you found it - I'd bet the next person to find it would keep it.
You're a good honest man Thomas ...

Well I decided to just leave it where I found it. Donating it sounded o.k. but that still would have required me to take ownership of it. Leaving it for the maid would have given the appearance to the maid that it came from me, which would've been misleading. Since I stay at this hotel often, and again next week, I wouldn't have wanted her to falsely believe I gave her money.
I hope she finds it in the drawer herself. When I check back in on Sunday, if I were to get the same room, and find the envelope again, I'll go crazy.
Who knows, I've found myself in the same hotel room I've previously stayed at. Maybe you'll be in the same room next week and find the envelope again. If that were so, I'd take it as a divine message and pocket the money.
Personally, though, I would hand the money to the manager and say I found it in the room. Then at least I tried my best to hand it to the proper authorites so that the rightful owner might be found. If the manager is dishonest and keeps the money, that's too bad, but at least I can have a clean conscience. Chances are that the manager will be more honest than the next guy who stays in the room and finds the money.
