Default Poll- What is your favorite land cruise?

Often I think of places that just aren't at their best when viewed from a cruise ship. I adore Puerto Vallarta, Mexico but I don't think an eight hour visit by cruise ship does this beautiful city justice.

Over the last twenty years I have gone there often, at least once each year, on a land cruise and I never tire of that city. I often stay there for two to three weeks at a time. Twice we stayed for a month. Thus I have acquired a network of really close friends, Mexican and U.S. citizens, that live there. They have shown me the "insider's" side of P.V. that you would never see from a cruise ship. I have learned what a magnificent city it really is.

There are little special places like Yelapa, Piedra Blanca, and Sayulita, one can visit for miles in every direction, when visiting that fair town. It is a shame cruise ships do not at least have overnight stays so that visitors can have an extra day to see more of the local charm. One evening, having dinner at Las Carmelitas Restaurant, up in the hills far above Banderas Bay, after a very bumpy and scary twenty minute cab ride from hell, would make the most cinical of travelers fall in love with P.V.Wow! What a city she is!

I hope this doesn't sound sappy but do you have places you love where a cruise stop just isn't enough to show the true beauty?

Of course! I actually think most port stops are not long enough to really experience a place.

For my vote, staying a few days in the Keys and really experiencing their character, especially in the Upper Keys, brings a much different perspective than a four-hour port stop in Key West.

Cheers,
Michelle B.

My most favorite place to go is to Cape Cod where I grew up. It's not very exotic, but I frequently find myself longing to be there. I think the sand and salt water and just the unique Cape atmosphere will always be pulling me home.

Hands down I would have to say my favorite land cruise is a few days stay on Mackinaw Island. No cars, only road apples. Of course sunday brunch at the Grand Hotel, followed by a drink in the cupola bar and another drink or two {{wink}} on the veranda. This is where they filmed Somewhere in Time, a great movie in my opinion. I'm pretty sure Robin likes it too.

I have a bunch of them. Telluride, Colorado for skiing. Daufuskie Island, S.C. for remoteness. Orlando, Fl. for theme parks. Maui for relaxing. Asheville, N.C. for mountain camping.

Just to name a few.

Regards,
Thomas

I'd have to vote for the Yucatan "ruined" cruise we did last year.

Disneyland! I'm a big kid and never get tired of it. I never have visited that "upstart" in Florida (I'm ducking :-) I have a childhood attachment to it - I watched it being built when I was a little girl and my father helped with the construction of several of the buildings and that door at the top of the Matterhorn that Tinkerbell comes out of before the fireworks (does that still go on?) I first visited Disneyland on my 8th birthday.

Oh, I thought we were just talking about cruise ports. Well, in that case I'll have to mention:

London, UK; also the rest of England, Wales, and Scotland

The San Juan mountains of Colorado (esp. Durango and Silverton)

The Hill Country of central Texas

St. Augustine, FL

Cheers,
Michelle B.

We have several land tours that are our favorites. I will mention a few.

Tour of Turkey, 24 days. Outstanding sights.

Tour of Isreal. 2 weeks. Wonderful

Tour of Egypt. 14 days. Wonderful also.

Tour of Macho Pechu in Peru. Cannot be beat.

Tour of Kenya, Tanzinia, Botswanna, Zembawe and South Africa. Sights to behold.

Complete tour of Europe visiting all the countries.

I could go on and on but nuff is enough.

Ray
