Default Poll: What do you collect

We all get off the ships and inevitably we wind up shopping for at least one thing.

What is it that you Collect to remind you of your cruises?

I used to collect ash trays, but we all gave up smoking so now it's small pictures, but sooner or later I'm gonna run out of walls. How about you?

I collect magnets, my boss started this collection for me about 12 years ago, I'am up to about 300 surprisingly, I don't normally buy my magnets. When someone else goes on vacation, I remind them to bring me back a magnet. I don't have a lot of duplicates. It's actually a pretty cool collection. I put them on my file cabinet in my office so it now looks like someone's refrigerator.

Gram and I collect pencil drawings and water colors (not always small) from many of our destinations. My local framer loves us and we have very little wall space in our family room, but, we have memories of many good times and some nice art to boot.

In the non cruise collectibles, Gram collects dolls and bears. Needless to say our grandaughters love to come and play (with the ones that are playable).
Papa collects wooden toys. Not necessarily old ones. I have dozens of trains, planes, boats, wagons, cars, games rattles , helicopters, trucks and the like. Many can be played with by the grandchildren , but I started this collection long before they came along. The kids love to visit as between Gram and Papa we have more toys than they do.

Magnets, t-shirts, shot glasses (for our daughter), matchbooks (Costa has wood ones, neat). LGriggs548 we did bring back some rum cakes, mm good. But the best thing we bring back is memories and videos (which help when the memory fails {{wink}}).

I just bring back the sail-and-sign cards, stick a magnet on the back and put them on the fridge. Other than that I just buy whatever catches my eye.

I buy pencil and watercolor drawings while I'm on my land trips but never thought about one from a cruise port. Thanks PapaBill, I'll be on the lookout for art on my next cruise.

Non-cruise collectible: fossils.

Cheers,
Michelle B.

I pick up the usual ship mug, gotta have one of those along with a t-shirt, either of the ship or one of the ports. Last year when cruising in Alaska I just had to have a crystal totem pole, did some shopping, but finally found the one :-)

Swizzle sticks, matchbooks and elephants (not the live ones). I started with the swizzle sticks in 1968 while working in Europe, and then continued saving them as my job took me to ten countries in East and Southeast Asia over the next 17 years. And now I collect them from the lands we visit on our cruises. Admittedly I didn't find them in churches or museums, so perhaps they have no religious or cultural significance. However, somebody sees some intrinsic value to them. Every time we have a party, a dozen or so seem to disappear and my shrinking collection now stands at a mere 200. Time to return to the ginmill circuit, I guess.<<wink>>

The matchbooks seemed to go hand in hand with the swizzle sticks, and have about an equal number of them. I began saving elephants in Vietnam in 1970, and today my collection stands at 60+. They're made of ivory, jade, brass, ebony and other woods, ceramic, you name it. Some of them come in sets of eight in diminishing sizes, called "elephant walk". I guess I'm just a collectaholic as well as a cruiseaholic.

Jack

We collect those little silver bells or shot glasses if the bells are not available. That is how we keep track of how many cruises we have done. <G>

I collect only frosted shot glass. My wife collects mini playing cards. One last thing we collect is $ 1. 00 poker chip from each cruise line and ship we have been on. You can buy picture frames made to hold poker chips. Great hanging for the rec. room.

A long time ago I wanted to collect a certain brand china but I have to come to the conclusion I can not take it with me when I go <> so I never did start to collect anything. We are not collecters of things.....

I, like Tweety, have begun a collection of small pictures done by the island locals. So far I only have two, but each time I look at them, I think of a cruise. Some of you will accuse me of ALWAYS thinking of cruising anyway!

For me it's fridge magnets from every place I've ever visited, cruising or not. The only thing I have more of on my fridge than magnets, are photos of family and friends!
My husband collects hats; baseball style caps from all over, and his special favourites are from the 3 cruises so far. I also like to get T-shirts from places I've visited ; my husband prefers stylish polo shirts from the cruise line.
Interesting thread, didn't know so many of you had "secret collecting lives"!!

I might have mentioned this before,my firefighter husband collects fire dept. t-shirts and patches from all vacations. We always have to map out fire stations before we go and pack extra t-shirts for trading. I collect post cards, bells and Hard Rock Cafe pins.

Not much of a shopper but I always add to my thousands of post cards as a deltiologist (remember for Trivia won a Princess mug with that answer, no one knew)!!!! I have to get one from Belize in Sept., know I don't have that one!

The drawings sounds like a good idea but I have no major wall space available! I do like to look at Christmas ornaments, I generally buy those my family and myself if I happen to go out shopping!

My family has finally told me no more t-shirts, except Becca, she'll always take clothes!!!

I collect too much! I try very hard not to collect anything else. I have a collection of lighthouse replicas sitting on the mantle. Most of them were complimenatry for participation in amateur radio activities involving lighthouses. I think the only one I paid for is a working model of a third order Fresnel lens. The rest were commemorative gifts.

And I have my radio room decorated with a collection of nautical art. My favorite of those pieces is a print of a watercolor montage of lost Great Lake ships, "The Gales of November." And I have my collection of nautical books, almanacs, maps, charts, etc.

Don't get me started on Chris's collection of rubber stamps, inks, cutters, punches, project papers...

ok... actually, I collect the Carnival "Capers" and the like from RCI from our cruises. I cut out the "headings" from each day and put them in the photo albums. That will make it easier to tell where all of the port pictures are from when we look at them "later" in life!

Hi: Interesting. I collect Tee Shrits and golf shirts but I saw the one person who collect $1.00 poker chips. I have those too. But mostly, I collect lots and lots of video for watching on those cold cold western NY days.

I have some friends with an Asain inspired house and they do put artwork on the ceiling but I haven't gotten that desparate YET!
