Default I may have to have foot surgery. How will it affect my cruis

Hi all..

I have 2 bone spurs that are cutting into and inflameing my Plantar Fascia (The ligaments on the very bottom of the foot) and Achilles Tendon.

My doctor is trying to avoid surgery by giving me pain killers and anti inflamatory's along with cortisone shots on the bottom of my foot and icing it down.

If that does not work then she is going to try Physical theraphy. I would do that 2 times a week for a month or so. If that don't help then i may have to have surgery.

And I have a cruise booked in Dec.

My foot is beging to affect my job. I am a EMT (Emegency Medical Tech.) I am ALWAYS on my feet and my Doctor thinks that is how I got the bone spurs. It is getting harder to work and even do everyday things. When i am at work I am in alot of pain.

If I have surgery it seems like the timing would be a moth or so before my cruise. And It takes 6 to 8 weeks to heal all the way. Including even more Physical theraphy.

I won't know untill after the 1st round of therapy if Ihave to have surgery.

I will be on the Radiance. How hard would it be to get around with say crutches or in a cast. If I have to have it before I cruise. HOPEFULLY if I have to have it I can postpone it untill after my cruise.

Any thoughts would help!!!

Thanks Susie

gosh susie, i would get it over and done with asap, it may be healed in time then. i don't know how it would affect your cruise though, would your destination be a rough seas one? an emt is a great job by the way. do you really find your job fulfilling?

Well depending on what you like to do oon a cruise, it could or could not be a problem.
If you like sitting around and reading alot, seeing the shows and just eating your days blissfully away, then I don't see a probelm. BUT< If you like to go to the beach , do a lot of watersports etc. then I can't see it doing those things with an open wound healing. Sand and salt water probaly is a recipe for wound infection. Also, if you plan on shopping a lot in port, then getting around on crutches would be a pain.

so depending on what you want form your cruise, it may or may not affect you.

I like the beach, I love to shop, I want to have a great time. i like doing nothing as well.

Do they have wheel chairs you can take places, like the beach on Coco Cay or to go shopping?

would salt water affect an open wound or would it be ok? just curious as there is an old wives tale about salt water being good for open wounds. The sea around the caribbean should be quite calm so i would think you'l have no problem with the motion of the ship.

Susie..My DW had what they call Achillies Tendon syndrom?sp...they tried pt and then the cortosone and then they went in and froze it..that worked for quite a while but she finally had to have surgery on it..now this was a spur at the back of her heel and I know yours in on the ball of your foot..but the freezing seemed to work for, I think about 6 mos. there was only on Dr in our state that would even touch her heel spur for fear of cutting the Achilles tendon..that would have been bad..that was about 5 yrs ago..now it is coming back again.

But I won't know untill at least Oct. and then i am in my 70 day window. I don't want to cancel it but. Will insurance cover this? I don't have any on my trip yet, BUT I am thinking hard about getting it.

I am not familiar with the wording ( insuring conditions and exclusions ) in the Cruise Insurance but I suspect it excludes Pre existing conditions. If that is the case it would be useless to purchse cruise insurance after you have been diagnosed.

Dear ssatterly
I feel for you, for I too had a bone spur but was able to avoid surgery. I did the PT and used a frozen can of fruit juice and rolled my foot along the can. My doctor also recommended several brands of shoes to wear at all times. I found the New Balance 608 worked the best for me. Took about a month befor I had any relief, but haven' had any problems since and that has been over a year now. Although I do need to replace the shoes about every 4 months. When I find them on sale I always buy 2 pairs.
I hope you get better and can avoid surgery as well.
To answer your question about wheel chairs, We were on the Century last Dec. and needed to get one for my father. They loaned us one free of charge and was able to keep it for the week. Sure was handy.
Good Luck

Susie, I've suffered from Plantar's Fascitis (sp?) and my Dr. recommended orthopedic inserts for my shoes. (I have a very high arch and this puts alot of pressure on the ball of my foot). The inserts have helped alot, except they're hard to wear in the summer with sandals! I would also recommend the surgery NOW, so it will be well healed before your cruise, after all, you will want to enjoy the pool and the beach!

Even if you can take the wheelcahair off the ship, I would imagine it being a nightmare in St Marten, crowded streets, narrow, stop and start side walks, pot holes, ugh, I would just take a tour that involved sitting in an open air bus, then if at a beach stop just use crutches to hop to a lounge chair and stay put.
St Thomas Havenside( sp?) mall is much better for shopping in a wheelchair.

If you don't purchase travel insurance within like 14 days of booking your cruise, it does not cover any pre-existing conditions.

Give the cortisone a bit of time to work. If you are fortunate, this will decrease the inflamation. I would keep my eye on the 70 day window, though. If the foot doesn't get better before then, I would cancel and book a different cruise. They sail every week. It doesn't pay to be miserable on your vacation.

Ouch.. susie.. I know how you feel. I have a bone spur in the front on the ball of my foot.. It always hurts.. shooting pain...

Don't really want the surgery because I am told It will probably come back.. My cousin had the same surgery you need and has been very happy with the results..

I walked Disney with a bandage cast on my foot when I broke it.. You can do it.. dont cancel!!!
