Since Michelle nominated me, I'll participate. I drink Chivas Regal. Price of course is going to depend on where you buy it. If you are going to mix it with anything, don't bother to buy anything more than a popular bar brand like J&B , Johnny Walker Red . or Dewars. All of the above are blended scotch and each bottle will taste the same and all will taste acceptable.
Single malts will vary in taste and will vary year to year (kind of like wine). You would have to try various single malts to find what you like. Some have a "medicine" taste, others an ash flavor etc.
I did a taste test with friend who was a scotch snob several years back. He claimed he only drank a particular brand of rather expensive single malt and could taste the difference. We poured five shots and he did in fact pick out the one he was sure
was his brand. Problem was, none of them were his brand, in fact all five were from the same bottle of house brand at the bar. He actually offered a differing opinion on all five shots.
My personal favourite is another single malt - Cardhu. But it's pretty expensive - so it's straight on the rocks. I paid $72 for the bottle in the cupboard now but up here in Canada everything costs more anyway! To a scotch drinker, it's worth it!
Papabill, I too have a fondness for Regal and I try to keep a bottle of it around for special occasions. I bought the current bottle aboard Sensation and I'll buy the next one aboard Inspiration, regardless how much is left in the current bottle.
But talk about variable prices. Have you ever had Royal Salute? Not many places will even serve it. For a single shot, I've paid from $3.25 to $10.00. The cheaper prices from less informed proprietors, who didn't know what they had in their inventory apparently.
A couple of dh´s work colleagues get Scotch for Christmas from us and we always get Glen Fiddich. It seems to be safe bet...??? We´ve received no complaints! I don´t ever remember it being unreasonably expensive either.
As far as a blended scotch goes, my favorite is Crawford's. It usually runs between $ 19.00 & 21.00 a 1.75 ltr. It's comparable in my opinion to the middle of the road scotches; i.e., Dewar's, J&B, Cutty, etc.
April, it doesn't make any difference--unless you desecrate Chivas by mixing it. In which case you'll have some folks banging on your door, with torches, staves, and pitch forks, to the accompaniment of bagpipes. So be very ,very careful. <L>
