Default Poll: Do you continue to exercise during your cruise?

With all the equipment available on the ships do you continue your work out or just skip it for the duration of your cruise?

I would continue the walking and would use the treadmill ............

Did you say Continue? Does that presume one is already doing such activity before?

i don't use the fitness center, i take the stairs whenever possible, walk the decks, swim, snorkel, stroll around town, and dance the night away.

Just lifting forks as often as we do on a cruise is more cardiovascular/strength building exercise than we get at home!

Do the stairs when I can, but must admit don't continue the walking each morning, I always go with the good thought of walking "this time".........

As I get "older" I find myself exercising less on cruises. At home I walk twice a day! No matter what the weather and living in Illinois that gets tricky, which is where Gurnee Mills Mall comes in!

On cruises I always did the walkathons, walk a mile, etc., morning stretch and exercise classes, but lately cruise lines offer less and less of these, plus charge extra. I will not pay for classes or to participate in any of their programs.

If I travel by myself, I follow my same routine that I do at home, get up, go for a walk, come home, have breakfast.

Walking every day is part of my life, I consider being active every day a necessity.

I confess that I do not do as much as I regularly do at home but I do make the effort to get an an exercise bike a couple of times.

No way! And you canīt make me either! I walk our dogs about two hours a day and am always happy when I can take a break from it. Donīt get me wrong! Itīs just so nice not to be all sweaty for a short period of time!

karen, who agrees that lifting a fork sounds like enough excercise!

When I am at home I go to the gym for weight training and I ride an excerise bike for cardo training but when on the ship I just do cardo training. When on the ship or at home I have healthy eating habits .

I exercise more on the ship than I do at home. Course I'm guilty of not doing much for exercise at home. :-) On the ship I like to walk around and see everything and it's easier and more fun to keep busy.

Forgot to mention one thing....

I think I would take advantage of trying something new out. Pilates, for example. It isnīt yet available where I live (and probably never will be!) so I would take the chance to try it out.

I'm probably one of those exceptions to the rule. I wouldn't even book a hotel room if they didn't have an exercise room. I work out twice a day, even on the ship. I also stay away from high carb foods and only eat the diet desserts, which I might add are really quite good and hard to believe that they're diet. The bright side is that you can eat as much soup, salad and meat as you like, as long as it's not the fatty pork or fried selections. That, in combination with exercise, means you should be able to leave the ship with the same snappy step that you boarded her with. Later.

I not only am able to do more while on the ship because of its vast array of equipemnt, but I also hit the steam and sauna every day while cruising. End result is that I usually lose a couple pounds which is amaziong considering the amount I eat! <> I really love the gym onboard the ships and medically the steam room is perfect for my aliments but just too darn expensive to have one at home and the town is too small to have one at the couple of gyms they have here.

Starfighter I am also on the low carb diet..the diet desserts are they not full of carbs? I wish the cruise line would make Suzanne Sommers low carb cheese cake.I made it before and it is wonderful !

Between the stairs (Susie and April have convinced me that stairs are my friends!) and the walking, both on the ship and in ports, and the swimming, I get at least as much exercise as I do at home. I came back from this last cruise with Susie feeling great, especially considering how uncooperative the lupus has been making my feet lately!

I'm with Kuki, the same on a cruise as at home: nothing. Unless you count endless walking around the ship, which just about makes up for my daily walks with the dog at home....

The diet desserts have some carbs, but to a lesser degree. I think all baked desserts have carbs, but you need some carbs to have a balanced diet and this is where I satisfy my carb intake for the day, while at the same time reducing my calorie intake over the other dessert selections. It like a balancing act. If you see something you would like to try that has more calories or carbs than you need, that's fine, but you need to cut back somewhere else, like on bread or rolls, so your daily intake on carbs and calories are somewhere in the ballpark. It's even okay to go over one day, if you can make up for it the next day. It's impossible to know the exact carb and calorie count of the foods they serve you, but there are charts available that enable you to approximate the counts enough to feel confident about it.

At home I run 5-6 times a week and when I am on a cruise I am up by 6am and running about 4-5 miles. After the run I swim in the pool for about 20 minutes.

You're right, Jennifer, I forgot all the stairs! I guess I did exercise a little! April started me on that, "stairs are my friends" routine, on the Brilliance! I kept saying, let's use the stairs and she kept mumbling, stairs are my friends, stairs are my friends!!! :-)

Susie

P.S. Kuki, you are too funny! :-)

I have the best intentions. I get up, get into my exercise gear and then lay around the ship like a cow.

The most excercise I get is getting in and out of my seat (see picture below). I used to bring my manual wheelchair when I went on vacation (keeps my upper body strong) but speeding across the deck, portside to starboard at breakneck speeds on a good pitch or roll wasn't my idea of a "fun time" : ) The scooter has dynamic braking so it can't become a runaway train : )

Ron
