Default Staten Island ferry crash

I couldnīt believe my ears this morning when I heard about the crash. What a tragedy for everyone involved. Here they said it was due to high winds and the ferry going too fast for the weather conditions.

New York has gone through so much with 9/11, the Blackout and now this. Bad luck runs in threes, so itīs said. Hopefully NYC will find some peace now.

I saw that footage on the news - incredible! What a tragedy for New Yorkers again.

How very sad - those poor New Yorkers! They are resiliant bunch, tho', and will bounce back once again.

Prayers and thoughts to the victims and their families.

I'm still trying to figure out the "chain of command" thing and why there wasn't a backup on the bridge.

This vessel had two captains on board at the time of the accident. So there was back-up on hand. It has been reported by Newsday that one of the captains, Richard Smith of Staten Island, drove to his house after the tragedy and attempted to commit suicide. He was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital in Staten Island, where he was reported to be in critical condition. How very sad for all concerned!

So, if there WAS a back up captain, what was he doing at the time of the crash?

Much sympathy for all of those affected....

I don't doubt that the other guy with a master's license was on board. WHY wasn't he on the bridge?
