I have little choice but to use the onboard Internet when I'm cruising. Because of the work I do for CruiseMates, combined with having elderly parents left at home, I spend more time than I like "hooked up" electronically.
There's certainly huge benefits to being able to stay in touch. [b]Do you take advantage of this technology when you're cruising? And.. if so... do you think you spend too much of your vacation on it?[/b
Due to our business I will check for messages 2 to 3 times on a 7 day cruise to see if their are any questions that need to be answered by those that are taking care of things while we are gone. I do not check everyday and will not check everyday.
On my 2nd cruise I got the large package for access. Unfortunately service was extreeeeeeeeeeeeemly slow (even slower than one particular ISP which I probably don't even need to mention). Service was probably down half the time too which no I did not get a refund for. The guy running the Internet cafe also was quite rude.
We generally check the e-mail once about half way thru the cruise, mainly to empty the junk mail out so the account isn't over the limit and real e-mails get bounced back. Since we are only on for a matter of a few minutes we don't buy any package plan.
Definately when we are cruising w/out kids. We check it at night so if anything important can know. Also can send a quick hello to them all each night for bed. Cheaper than a call. Will have to check out Princess with being able to receive emails too. Hmm.... do I want to get stuff? Actually, have a dear friend who will have it if it is needed. Ddad can get a hold of her if he has too.
Didn't use it when I was on the Glory with Susie, but that was because I was able to call Josť on my cell phone for several of the days we were gone.
On other cruises I have logged on for a few minutes here or there to check in with Cruise Mates. I think it's fun to rub your noses in it when I'm cruising and you're not! !
Not a cruise, but on the two-week land trip Josť and I took this summer to Florida and Cozumel it was a lot of fun reporting in here to Cruise Mates every couple of days or so from the different hotels along the way.
So I'd have to say, yes, I'm an internet user when I'm on vacation!
I do email the kids or to friends once or twice but don't want to spend too much money doing that. Once I complete another Princess cruise, I will be get free access. Then I will probably use it more, but not too much. It kind of defeats the purpose of "getting away from it all"!
We only used it once on a 3 day cruise. We had some bad weather on the private Island day and couldn't tender over so the money we would have spent on the island, we decided to email family and try the internet cafe. The other two cruises we have been on we had so much other stuff to do we didn't bother to do any computer related things either on the ship or in ports.
Definitely use it and love it BUT only for quick notes to keep in touch with the kids! They're not quite used to Mom & Dad being out on their own!! The shoe is on the other foot now that they are the ones "waiting up"!! Also try not to go over my "free" RCI Platinum minutes allotment! (Also better than trying to send postcards to a few friends)
