Default Happy Birthday, Popeye!

Happy 75th, Popeye! I think you, if anyone, started this landlocked midwesterners seaward dreams. And today marks the 75th anniversary of your first appearance in the comic strip "Thimble Theater." Blow me down! You were just a cameo that became an icon.

Because of you, I likes me sea days.
Because of you, I likes me spinach.
Because of you, I yam what I yam
And what I starts, I finish.

Happy birthday, and thanks! [TOOOOOOOOOT!]
Hyuk hyuk hyuk hyuk hyuk hyuk!

May I assume that you all know that the people depected in this comic strip were taken from actual people in the originators hometown? Popeye was a skinny old one-eyed man that loved to get into fights and smoked a corncob pipe, Olive Oil was a skinny women he knew that also wore a bun in her hair and Whimpy was the owner of the local theater that used to send out his employees during intermission to get him hamburgers!

Yep, I listen to Paul Harvey, too. But the birthday was noted in the 2004 "Mariner's Book of Days," me favorite calendar <wink, TOOOOOOOT!>. I read it there beofre I turned on the radio. I think he said the archetype's name was Joe Beidner. And the environs of his shack was the inspiration for Sweethaven, or whatever they called the town.

My family's canine member from the time I was 5 until I was 15, was named for the sake of his fondness for hamburgers, Wimpy. It seemed to be the only human food that would overcome his domestic inhibitions. If you took your eyes off your sandwich for an instant, he would grab it, and you'd find him bolting it down, pausing only to spit out the onions. Then he'd wait for the next person to avert their eyes, just long enough. It was devastating when he went to the big hamburger stand in the sky. The family still talks about him, forty years later.

Wow! I missed it on Paul Harvey. Certainly would have loved to hear what he had to say about it!
