Looking to send our parents on a cruise for their 50th anniversary, but have a small problem; my father won't get on a plane. Makes for a difficult journey from Detroit. I could get them to Montreal, New York or Baltimore by train, but I'm beginning to wonder if they might enjoy a riverboat cruise more than an ocean cruise. Much easier to get them to Memphis, St. Louis, or Cincinnati. Any advise on river vs. ocean cruises would be appreciated.
I hear they're getting ready to relaunch the Boblo boat (a Detroit River/Lake Erie ferry I used to enjoy as a child). :-) I treated my parents to a week at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island for their 50th.
That's a great cruise site, Michelle! I hadn't realized there were so many Great Lakes passenger vessels. Some like the MV Columbus with 200+ cabins seem to offer all the accommodations of their ocean-going counterparts. One thing Pipeman didn't mention is the anniversary date. Not many ships sail outside the months from June-September. I remember a saying we used to have in Michigan, There are four seasons, June, July, August and Winter.
