Default POLL: Most amazing sight seen from a cruise ship?

What is the most amazing thing you've seen from a cruise ship? I have three One is a pod of Orca whales off the coast of Baja California. Another one is sunrise over Cabo San Lucas. And finally, seeing a sunset over the Caribbean Sea while talking with friends.

Tom, the one thing that stands out in my mind is seeing a beautiful full moon over Puerto Rico. Of course, the fact that it was our first cruise ever had a lot to do with the excitement! I can still remember how that made me feel and even now when I see a full moon, I'm thrown back to that night!

I would definately say it was on our Alaska cruise, Orka's swimming as we were on the inside passage. Then one night at dinner we had dolphins swimming on the back of the ship, very cool!

Donna:

The back of the ship has to be close to 100 feet above the water. How did the dophins get on the back of the ship?

Marc,
,
The dolphins love playing in the ship's wake, thats where they were. We had a table back by the windows and could just sit and watch them, I love dolphins :-)

Not knowing how memorable it would be, sailing out of New York Harbor on the Maasdam in 2000. Fortunately, I have some wonderful black and white photos of the World Trade Center, with me in the foreground.

Looking at those photos now is such a bittersweet feeling.

As I mentioned in my "Legend of a Cruise" continuing saga a few months back, the most amazing sight I've ever seen from a cruise ship was the spectacle of my very stressed, tired and slightly drunk husband, sound asleep on our balcony in a raging thunder and lightning storm on our way out of N.Y. Soaked to the skin with the most peaceful smile on his face! I have a photo, but he won't let me print it!

Sailing out of Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, on the maiden QM2, with 10,000 people on the pier and 100,000 lining the shore, fireworks going off overhead, and the shoreline lit up with thousands of flashbulbs, while "Rule Brittania" played over the loudspeaker system.
Second was early morning sailing into Fort Lauderdale for the first time, same QM2 voyage, condo high-rises lit up with flash bulbs, tugs with red, white, blue water cannons, US Navy destroyer accompanying us, while "Stars and Stripes Forever" played over the sound system, watching Commodore Warwick on the bridge beaming with pride...

We have a tradition that after we find our cabin, change into shorts (after all, we are from the beautiful Northeast) and make our way to the pool deck, we order a couple of cocktails, and we make a toast that we made it and we hope to have another wonderful vacation. The sight of the smile on my wife's face has no comparison.

I liked seaing the coasts of the ports we visited, particularly Grand Cayman.

One amazing sight was on our first cruise on the Independence cruising around Hawaii. The night we cruised by the active volcano was unbelievable. The volcano was really flowing hard at that time and to see the mountainside lit up with lava and to see the steam, waves and hear the explosions as the lava crashed into the sea was something I will never forget.

Another is seeing Alaska from a cruise ship. Seeing whales and seeing the glaciers calve is another unforgetable sight.

Watching the lightning off in the distance from a hurricane at night from the deck of a cruise ship is also something that will not leave my mind soon.

One of the most amazing sights from a cruise ship (but there have been many) was on our Millineium Cruise on an RCCL ship (can't remember which one right now) and all the ships were in a circle in the Caribbean and we watched fireworks at midnight......it was really something. One of many great memories from a cruise ship; hopefully, many more to come.
Happy Cruising.....Anita

I dont know if this qualifies as amazing, but it sure was memorable. We were on a tender in January 2003, returning to the S/S Norway from St. Thomas at a time when all the ship's lifeboats were undergoing their periodic testing. Here were all these orange boats circling around the Blue Lady, looking for all the world like a covey of ducklings swimming under the protection of their mother. It was spectacular! I even sent a snapshot of this event to an NCL Latitudes photo contest, but I guess it failed to impress the judges.<S>

There are so many neat sights I've seen: a rainbow over the northern tip of Martinique during sailaway (it started over land and ended in the water), glaciers calving in Glacier Bay and College Fjord in Alaska, sunset over the Pacific ocean in Lahaina. But the neatest memory I have was when I was on the Millennium February of 2001. We were about to sail away from FLL and I turned and looked out toward the ocean and saw the Infinity waiting for a place to berth in FLL. She was arriving in FLL for her maiden voyage after being delivered from the shipyard. When the Millie left port, instead of heading south, we headed east and met up with the Infinity. The two ships circled each other with horns blaring and the crew on the Infinity cheering and waving at those of us on the Millie. It sent chills down my spine!

The sunrise over the hillside as we were approaching St. Thomas was glorious(3/03). My husband and I were sitting on our balcony having coffee and it was a beautiful moment. Our first time having a balcony, and now we are spoiled.
