I was just wondering if anyone has gotten bumped to 1st class on your flight when there was extra seats open? I was on a SANTO tour once and was told on that tour if the 1st class was open you paid extra at the gate, like $50 and got 1st class. Anyone heard of this? Anyone tried it? Just curious...
I always ask. I´ve had luck on a few flights keeping in mind they were all international. Sometimes points were deducted from my frequent flier card or I´ve had to pay anywhere up to roughly $150. I´ve never received them for free except for once when I had to sit next to a man who was afraid of flying. He went a tad crazy, refused to leave his seat and so I was asked to occupy the last remaining free seat...in business class. Boy did I move fast!
I have been bumped up twice, a thank you from the gate agent when i have volunteered to be bumped, and then they didn't need my seat..It was fabulous...wide seats, great food, and oh those hot towels Trip/Monday Chat Host
My spouse and I have been bumped up twice to first class because we have volunteered to be bumped (but they didn't need us). Also, one other time we missed our connection and the airline had to put us up all night at a hotel in St. Louis and then the next morning put is on the first flight out in first class. I have to admit first class sure is better than coach. I felt kind of special on those trips.
Got "bumped" to 1st class on British Airways from Heathrow once, although I think a few strings were pulled by my brother-in-law in London. Best darn flight I've EVER had, food, drink, relaxation, service, pampering - heaven!
We also got first class seats when we took a bump on an overbooked flight. We were put on a flight that left 2 hours later and put in first class. It was only a short flight but was excellent. That plus the free roundtrip ticket made the delay well worth our wild.
