Do U like the sounds of "the Pipes"?... bag pipes,
Kuki reporting in again at Stampede central. (Had to sit down again to rest my back).
It's a tradition to the kick of the Calgary Stampede... after marching in the parade, the Calgary City Police Bagpipe band march into the bar and play for awhile for our patrons.
Well... today, they came in, followed by the visiting Vancouver Police Bagpipe Band, and then followed by the Highlanders Bagpipe band, complete with highland dancers. All took turns entertaining.
After downing a few beers the three bands got together and did the most REMARKABLE version of Amazing Grace. Total of 65 bagpipes and drums playing, really was something to see and hear!! For the last "set" of the song, the band who is entertaining here joined in with the pipers, and by the end I saw quite a few people in tears.

When you sail on a Windjammer Barefoot Cruise they play a bag pipe version of Amazing Grace each time they raise the sails . It is quite emotional.
Being of Irish decent I can handle a bit more of piping than most, but ,after a while it would take a few beers to get me to continue to listen. 65 pipers , indoors, would probably put me a bit over the edge (presuming I wasn't up to my 4th or 5th pint). It must have been quite a special combination of sight and sound. Did anybody get it on tape?
Re: Do U like the sounds of "the Pipes"?... bag pipes, not p
To me bag pipes are like a Barbershop Quartet. They are great in small amounts. After two or three songs I begin to dislike them. The dislike increases exponentially with each song.
:-)
Take care,
Mike

My husband is a firefighter and they seem to go together with bagpipes. They are marvelous... but seems like in the last few years, there's been too many playing at WAY too many firefighter funerals. It's always good to hear them somewhere other than that !
On a funny note, one of our firefighter buddies was getting married and his new wife surprised him during the ceremony with a bagpiper walking in the church. The church was fairly large, and didn't have good acoustics at all. The little 4 year old ring bearer (the nephew of the new wife), plugged his ears, scrunched up his face and declared, in a very loud voice so that his aunt could hear him, that it was too noisy. Everyone laughed !

I'm Scottish, and Amazing Grace on the pipes always has me in tears. If anyone is going/has gone to the Military Tattoo , up at the castle,at the Edinburgh Festival, the massed pipes and drum bands are really something to see and hear.

At a boy scout district campout one time a fellow played taps on the bagpipe. The sound of taps coming thru the woods is always a little eerie to me, especially when you can't *see* the performer. With bagpipes it was downright spooky!

Will we see and hear it on the CTV news tonight Kuki? I'll be watching!
It's funny, I used to hate bagpipes, but over the years, I've grown to appreciate them - must be the Scottish in my blood! My next door neighbour is a piper and we invited him to pipe us in when we arrived home from our wedding to the backyard reception. He played Amazing Grace, scared the heck out of the guests disembarking, and the rest of the neighbourhood for miles around, but it WAS memorable!

Laying down on the topside deck of a Windjammer ship on a clear night with millions of stars visible and the playing of Amazing Grace with vocals and bagpipes is the most hauntingly spiritual experience I've ever witnessed. It's simply beyond description.
Re: Do U like the sounds of "the Pipes"?... bag pi
We have had Amazing Grace bag piped for the last two family funerals. It is such a moving and meanful hynm, and having it bag piped just makes it so powerful it is overwhelming. I loved it.
Re: Do U like the sounds of "the Pipes"?... bag pi
I love the pipes. In any amount, for as long as people will play them. I even have tapes/cd's of just piping. The definitely strike a chord deep within me.

I forgot to mention, each August in Montreal, and for the past few years, in a park very near my home, they hold the annual HIghland Games. One of the highlights is the opening ceremonies in which some 60 or more bagpipe bands from all over, march in formation all around the football field, playing in unison. There's nothing quite like it!
VTJen, you can probably hear them from where you are!!
