AT&T Wireless entered a joint venture with Maritime Telecommunications Network that may make it possible for cruise passengers to use their cell phones while at sea.
The new company, Wireless Maritime Services (WMS), plans to develop a system using a combination of satellite and wireless technologies that will work on board cruise ships at sea.
WMS is working with several cruise lines and intends to introduce service within the year.
My cell phone goes with me in case of emergency with travel to/from port. But while on the ship - it is off and in my suitcase.
I can, however, see where this may be helpful. My brother was on a two week cruise with me in 2002. He is a doctor in IL and wanted/needed to check on his paitents while gone - Only in2 ports did his cell phone work - other than that, paid for a couple of calls from the ship and a couple from other ports, but would have been much more convienent for him and his staff (if they needed to get in touch with him for a paitent) if his cell had worked everywhere. (His phone is ALWAYS on vibrate and he will leave a crowed area to talk).
