getting a good deal

My friend and I want to go on our first cruise. We live fairly close to one of the major departure ports in California, the Ports O' Call in L.A. Have heard that you can drive down there early on a Friday morning and get a great deal on the Mexican Riviera cruises leaving that day. Wondering if anyone has ever tried that.

Cruising the same day is no longer possible. HSA now requires cruise lines to provide a list of all passengers 1 day prior to departure. I have seen that notice on the online pre-registration pages of both Carnival and RCCL. I know that bites, but that's the way it is now.
